Considered Both Products
RUN Powered by ADP®
Chose RUN Powered by ADP®
I selected RUN Powered by ADP® because not only were the employees very straightforward and informative when I was inquiring about their service but the price was reasonable as well. I felt that Paylocity was being a little sneaky when it came to how billing would be handled. I …
Chose RUN Powered by ADP®
The cost was about the same but ADP had a much better HR function and online background checks and ZipRecruiter. We also like the ability to easily add the ADP 401k product although we have not done so yet. As an accountant, I appreciate the "GL Company View" report that has …
Chose RUN Powered by ADP®
I did not select ADP, it was the system in place when I started. We are moving away from ADP as it is not robust enough for our needs.
Paylocity
Chose Paylocity
ADP was not user-friendly at all. It was quite confusing just to process payroll, much less reports. We had an HR clerk steal over $50k by adding direct deposits to her payroll, and ADP never alerted anyone. When called about this, they claimed it is not their responsibility.
Chose Paylocity
Out of all the other HRIS systems I have used, I spend way less time doing my job with Paylocity. Paycom has so many pages to weed through to do anything or find information, Paychex Flex was underwhelming at best, and ADP Workforce Now had too many segmented features that it …
Chose Paylocity
ADP had limited tools and couldn't manage a single payroll run with multiple pay periods. Paylocity solved that issue and eliminated our need for a 3rd party recognition platform
Chose Paylocity
ADP did not allow for a streamlined process like I wanted. It was much more user friendly for payroll processing though and there were less errors.

ADP
I feel that RUN Powered by ADP® is best suited for small businesses or businesses that are busy and want to rest assured their payroll is being taken care of. RUN Powered by ADP® has handled our payroll needs for over a year and we are extremely pleased with not only the error free payroll but the error free reporting and tax filings. This has allowed us peace of mind to know things are being handled by the experts.

Paylocity
Paylocity works really well for a company our size (approx. 600 employees). I think if we were to triple in size it would likely work just as well. Especially if the changes requested on a prior question were implemented. Some things, such as being able to e-verify an employee, is tied to using the onboarding feature of Paylocity that we cannot use, due requirements of the new owners of the company. That means we have to everify outside of the payroll system. This is the one thing our prior payroll provided did that is better than what Paylocity can provide. Bundling features is understandable but it would be nice if some functionality could be used outside of the bundle to accommodate the needs of the customer.

Pros
ADP
  • Payroll calculation of Vacation time, Sick time, etc.
  • History of employee, able to run reports on hours worked and earned wages, for specific periods.
  • We are able to contact a live person for assistance when we cannot find what we need in RUN.

  • Provides the majority of our data for our employees and reporting in one software product.
  • Once setup; the Onboarding feature makes bringing in new employees very smooth while collecting and completing all compliance information from the candidate themselves.
  • Performance Module with Journals provides a good platform for documenting positive as well as disciplinary events.

Cons
ADP
  • Our managers sometimes have trouble approving timecards and PTO requests. They don't always get alert when their team puts requests in. Also, they are often taken to the wrong page when they get a PTO request alert with a link in it. The link often takes them to Wisely instead of the proper page to approve requests.
  • We have two new entities that have upgraded timekeeping applications that are within RUN. I can only track hours based on pay periods, there is no monthly report that shows me hours worked. This is difficult because I need this number for a monthly KPI we track.
  • When I assign training videos in ADP, my employees will receive an email with a link to the training, however, the link never works or takes them to the correct page to watch the assigned videos. I am not sure why.

  • Competency of Dedicated Customer Service Reps: These individuals' competency range varies greatly. We have had reps assigned to us who couldn't compose a legible email and couldn't answer questions promptly. We've had other reps who didn't share their names. We've had other reps that were incredibly knowledgeable and responsive to our inquiries.
  • The Scheduling Tool: This tool doesn't speak to time sheets. Cost centers used on the scheduling tool are overridden by "rules" inside the timesheet program, and there's no way to override this element. This results in hours of manual entry that need to be done every payroll.
  • Help Tools: The general help database is TOO cumbersome to the extent that it is unusable in many/most cases. The videos in the Training Catalog are wonderful; however, they are often outdated and use mobile device applications as the example vs. desktop or both (e.g., some of the time and labor videos).
  • Reports: The report writer is usable; however, the last update with an AI search bar is clunky and hasn't been helpful.

It is much better than the payroll system I used previously. The integrations that RUN has for on-boarding new hires are very convenient when they work properly. It saves a tremendous amount of time being able to email a link to new employees that allows them to enter much of their own demographic information. Payroll feature alerts me when someone's pay is significantly less or more than usual.

We have had many issues with the way our platform was set up at implementation that still continue to plague us. In addition, our benefits, in particular our FSA, have been mis-managed causing a balance due from an employee (and also a lot of work for our accounting and HR team, as well as stress for the employee). Our service rep continues to answer incorrectly on many fronts (original response is usually check out this paylocity article, vs. helping) and recently our COBRA management was mishandled (not adding Dental to a person on Cobra who had requested it). So- all in all...we are not particularly happy w/ Paylocity

Usability
ADP
I have been using this system for years and they have actually made it easier and easier. The system is always making great upgrades that don't necessarily require any additional information or training. I love when I log in and see a new feature or button that I get to use to make my life easier!

I find Paylocity to be almost too robust so that its functionalities are sometimes too complex to use. Sometimes it appears that they don't get a user's experience and keep a software developers mindset which doesn't always work well with users that are not at their technical level of expertise. A perfect example is the way the payroll dashboard USED to look compared to the recent update

Paylocity support is always available and I never have to wait endlessly on hold. If our dedicated account manage is not available, there is an entire team assigned to our account. Every one of them is knowledgeable about our organization and Paylocity's process.

ADP Run loads a bit slowly at times, once I put in my credentials. However, that said, I think my perception of the time it takes is impacted by our "instant gratification" expectation of being able to get into everything quickly.

Support Rating
ADP
At times it takes a few minutes to reach someone and sometimes the ADP automated voice prompt does not recognize my name when I say it. Also, sometimes I am forwarded to different departments and I have to explain my issue 2 or 3 times. It is hard to know whether it is an ADP Run/payroll processing issue versus an ADP Time and Attendance issue. Over the last year or so that I have called ADP, sometimes I am left on hold for a very long time.

Everyone wants immediate assistance. Awaiting a response from an email only to ask 2-3 more questions is time consuming. Within the first six months of setup, I would rather respond back to the instructors who provided me the training in each category of my contract.

I didn't have in-person training, but I'm sure it was just as great as any other training/assistance Paylocity provides. Paylocity customer service is always available. You never have to be on hold and their answers are always accurate and timely. Documents in the help section are helpful as well. My in-person training was conducted y one of our employees who was involved in the initial set-up and training of all employees. She was excellent.

The training was live online, but was with a group of other companies. We did not receive any personalized training with our team. Whenever we would ask for training, we would be sent a peak article link or a video. It felt like the reps we dealt with didn't know the answer to the questions.

The payroll side of RUN is pretty similarly useful as other products, but the HR side is definitely more useful. I appreciate the ability to talk with a rep about specific questions and the fact that there are so many articles, webinars, and podcasts available.

With Paychex, I feel like they have not really kept up with the times. I feel like Paylocity really expands as their users are growing. We changed from iSolved to Paylocity because when it came to processing payroll and getting support for anything, it was an absolute nightmare for us. So Paylocity has been leaps and bounds above the others. As far as support goes.

Every summer, we hire three new college interns who have to be entered into the system. They can enter their information themselves, which takes a load off me. The onboarding is quite straightforward, and today's college kids are techy enough to be able to understand it.

  • By using RUN Powered by ADP for our payroll and related tasks, we free up the owners'/managers' time. This allows them to do more work directly related to clients, which increases our billable time, which has a huge impact on our bottom line. As a small business, this is essential.

  • We are working towards better data-driven decision making, so we're in the process of putting all of that in place and building the data. As far as errors specifically with the timekeeping, employees can take ownership over their own time by adding their missed punches and notes into the system directly. So that has reduced admin time as well as errors on Paychex
