It works very well for my cooking business.

Magento Commerce Cloud (formerly Magento)

Magento Commerce Cloud works great for us, an ecommerce company. Any other company (of decent size) should consider Magento. They offer many features right out of the box and allow a ton of customization as well as easy integration with third party vendors. I could imagine that if you were a smaller company, Magento would likely be overkill for your online store.

Pros

  • The CRM holds all of my contacts and it is already integrated with all of my other tools.
  • The Email Management system is already integrated with all of my other tools. This means that I do not have to download CSVs and upload them to a separate email program everytime I want to send out an email blast.
  • I can take payments in the same system that has my email marketing and CRM. This means that I can create tags and send different email campaigns depending on if I have received payment or not.
  • The website hosting means that I can use the same software to update my blog and gallery of food pictures.
  • I can sell tickets to my cooking classes from the same software that manages everything else that I do in my business.
  • I use the task manager that is built in to remind me of things I need to do. I really like that it is tied into my CRM so I can tag tasks to specific clients.
  • The built in timecard system allows me to "clock in" to whatever client that I am working on so that my time and hourly rate are automatically calculated for me. My invoices are sent automatically on the first of each month.

  • Magento Commerce Cloud allows us to develop our own custom solutions for problems that we need solved.
  • Magento Commerce Cloud can also be integrated with many of the third part vendors that we use. This has made many implementations go very smoothly and tends to be much quicker than developing our own custom solution.
  • There are many features available right out of the box. Many of them we have not implemented yet, but it is great to have them available to us when we are ready.

Cons

  • QuickBooks Integration
  • More email templates
  • They do not have an app

  • Magento Commerce Cloud can be complicated to develop for. In our field, it has been a struggle at times to find qualified developers.
  • Our merchandising team sees performance issues from time to time. Updating a product and waiting for the change to clear the queue can take up to an hour in some situations.
  • Because of the incredible amount of features that Magento Commerce Cloud offers, training new employees to use Magento takes a long time.

Magento implementation services drive a decent amount of revenue to our company and allow us to work with a more diverse client base. From a customer perspective, I expect most businesses will want to continue working with the tool as long as it supports the business needs. eBay shows signs of making the tool even stronger and able to grow with any sized business

Alternatives Considered

I used to use Microsoft Excel to organize my business - but it got pretty crazy pretty fast.

Magento is solid and has a proven track record with years and years of backing. There are tons of plugins and customizations available in the market. It really depends on your specific environment though, since a ".net shop" may want to stick with the same server hardware/architecture rather than introduce another technology stack... It is a solid choice

Return on Investment

  • It just makes it easier for me to track what is going on in my business.
  • I like having everything in one place, instead of a bunch of different programs.

  • Magento has provided our primary platform for our eCommerce Business over the last four years. It has its limitations, but have been reliable. We have no immediate plans to move off of Magento.
  • If and when we decide to launch the 4th domain and intend to produce a more personalized or customizable user-experience, we may search for a platform that supports a wider variety of visual and custom options "out of the box".
