Amplitude Analytics

If you are working with a tool where tracking actions taken by users in that tool is very important. In tools with very few users and not a ton of custom editing, this may not be necessary

IBM Digital Analytics

IBM analytics has continued to improve upon the days of being the original core metrics. After using the updated version for quite some time, it has been great at providing the needed analytics to measure ROI and goal performance for our quarterly KPI's. It has resulted in a great increase in web engagements although we are a midsize company, smaller outfits may not need such an expensive option.

Pros

  • Very user-friendly and easy to understand even for those with not much knowledge
  • The interface is nice looking
  • Different charts are used to analyze different types of data

  • It's relatively easy to export and schedule reports.
  • The new UI has a simple and clean design.

Cons

  • No capabilities to group numbers.
  • Impossible to aggregate the data altogether so sometimes it's hard to have a real overview of everything.
  • Even though I find the interface rather user-friendly and accessible to people new to data analysis, maybe it could be useful to have a step by step guide when starting using the tool.

  • IBM Digital Analytics allows for custom values in the tags, but they can only be accessed by creating Explore reports and there is a charge for each new report created. If the values could be accessed freely that would make a huge difference.
  • Segments sometimes take a long time to process, and this slows the analysis quite a bit. Moreover the limit that is imposed is sometimes very restrictive (10 maximum)
  • The interface is not very user friendly.

As reports are templated, the system is pretty quick. Sometimes you have to wait a bit for a report to render. Or you might have to re-load the page. But there is no real issue here and the system is on par with other similar systems.

Overall, the level of support is very good and I would say it is a strong asset of the solution. However, you can sometimes feel that there is a difference of level among the support team.

Online training is really great. One of the best assets that they have. Lots of great videos, pop quizzes at the end of each module. Fantastic. Other tools have similar features, but not as good.

Alternatives Considered

Amplitude Analytics is an easier tool to use. It requires less knowledge of SQL and as long as you have notions of data analysis and retrieving data in general. It is much more user-friendly and allows for easy and quick reporting. It can be used by different teams and therefore can be an easily shareable tool.

Have extensive use of Omniture and Google Analytics, but I find Digital Analytics the best for retailers. It's is an easy to use solution that highlights the merchandising and marketing issues related to your website

Return on Investment

  • Positive: Quicker analysis of our important business funnels
  • Positive: Decreased time asking engineering to run reports
  • Positive: Easy collaboration and funnel development

  • Having just completed a re-platform for the West Marine site and changing from Adobe to IBM for analytics, there are no significant business changes to link to our choice of an analytics package. That said, I would never be inclined to attribute the ROI to the analytics package itself. IBM and Adobe both have excellent enterprise-class analytics packages. Any decisions should be attributed to the analyses or managers, not to their tools. I don't credit Excel or Access with any ROI either.
