We had slowness, but didn't know where. We quickly would find out if it was the network, database, app server, webserver, or otherwise. They don't like me saying this, but it's a great "finger-pointer".

SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

With a limited operations staff it would be next to impossible to get the insight into all the server and applications stacks in our environment. The reality is that there would be issues that would go undiscovered for who knows how long. If there's no smoke you might not notice many issues. SolarWinds Server & Application Manager (SAM) has worked well for us to work with application owners to show that performance issues that they may perceive are not part of the environment but the application configuration. The biggest benefit to me is just shortening the time to resolution for issues and more importantly providing me with information that allows me to be proactive and attack problems before they are noticed by our users.

Pros

  • Integration with multiple frameworks (Java, NodeJS, .NET, etc). Good database monitoring tool as well as end-user and synthetic user monitoring tool.
  • Works great for on-premise and is always maturing and keeping up with industry trends.
  • It's been in Garter's Leader Quad for years now.
  • Very intuitive web UI and IT, Mgmt, QA, Devs, and Ops could easily use it.

  • SAM helps our support staff identify applications not meeting our designed SLAs. We have two industry specific applications that have memory leak issues and using this platform we are able to set threshold warnings up letting us know it is time to take a preventative step to make the applciation behave correctly.
  • SAM also allows us to monitor server performance so if we end up with logs that get out of control and start eating drive space up, we are promptly alerted so corrective action can take place before service degrades.
  • I like have the SAM trend reports so I can see how the performance of applications behave overtime so I can ensure we have enough compute resources to meet our growing business demands.

Cons

  • It is quite pricey, though does provide a lot more detail than other APM providers.
  • Traversing the call stack through multiple application layers can get confusing at times.

  • I tend to get a lot of false negatives with the new built in IIS and SQL monitors, so many that I no longer use them and find it annoying that they keep trying to hit every computer I import.
  • Navigating the SAM settings page can be very confusing unless you use it a lot (in which case you might be doing something wrong since SolarWinds is largely set it and forget it). It would be nice if it were in a more hierarchical setup.
  • If you do set up an application monitor incorrectly you can email bomb yourself or worse your customers very quickly. Test, test, test!

Mainly because it can be pricy, but well worth the cost at renewal when pared with all of the other solar wind' modules. It does allow us to streamline the troubleshooting process.

SAM is very useful, the monitors provide relevant information. The lower rating was more to deficiencies in the Orion web platform than to SAM itself. It is very rigid and cumbersome to customize for a particular users role

I think there was only a couple times I had to open a support case for SAM and one time they got multiple engineers on the phone to get a better idea what I was trying to monitor and was able to point me in the best direction to monitor that system.

Alternatives Considered

I didnt like any of the functionality or the layout this application provided. I saw the growth with AppDynamics and the possible potential mainly because we have visibility to the actual application code. This is one of the best options by far to ensure the vendor fixes bugs in the code.

Other than SolarWinds Orion Server and Application Monitor, we have used the Microsoft monitoring solution, System Center Operations Manager SCOM, as well as VMware's Vrealize suite of products. We also use the Dell EMC tool Vipr as well as tools that are built into our virtualization platforms including VBlock and VxRail as well as Dell-Emc, HPE and a variety of other hardware specific solutions. We have not used a product other than SolarWinds Orion Server and Application Monitor that provides the amount of detail in one place nor have we considered changing or using another product.
