AppDynamics

We had slowness, but didn't know where. We quickly would find out if it was the network, database, app server, webserver, or otherwise. They don't like me saying this, but it's a great "finger-pointer".

SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

I can't think of a scenario where SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor would not be appropriate! You get so much out of this tool with very little effort. SAM is another set of eyes in my environment. I pair SAM with NetFlow and to get a great understanding of the data flows in my environment. I have set up custom application monitors for almost every component running, and are using the Windows Time Skew App monitor constructed by SolarWinds. There are so many great templates already created for the end user. When you get good enough, you can configure your own template and share with the THWACK community and other SolarWinds users. The greatest thing about SolarWinds in general; the end users drive the products

Pros

  • The user interface is brilliant, especially the map showing the flow of network traffic between your various pieces of hardware being monitored.
  • Easy to identify slow running queries.
  • Quick and easy to set up.

  • Netflow information and configuration management of network devices works really well for us. As these two comprise two of the core products of SolarWinds Orion suite it's good that it does this
  • SAM (Application manager) Provides excellent insight into services and service states and is very customizable.
  • Support community is excellent (THWACK) as is the available free training from the SolarWinds Customer Portal. Which is good, you're going to need it due to the depth and complexity of the software suites.

Cons

  • Price of the AppDynamics is high. But it has many valuable features. This makes it difficult for small businesses to enter.
  • Functionality is overkill for most small to midsize businesses (SMBs). When stacking up product units, it can get pricey for enterprises as well.
  • With fine granular configs and customizations available, it will also mean that it is very complicated and requires a certain amount of knowledge before we can make full use of all features in the product. Much careful thought and planning is required to get the most of it. Set-up will be longer. One recommendation is for features to be better documented.

  • Reports and dashboards can be quite simple without customization. Customizations in general can have a little slower learning curve.
  • Some clients depend on batch and shell scripts. The tool provides monitoring though the logs, but that is it. We would like to see more detail regarding the consumption of resources in these types of programs.
  • For Azure apps monitoring, other Microsoft tools like SCOM have a better performance overall.

Mainly because it can be pricy, but well worth the cost at renewal when pared with all of the other solar wind' modules. It does allow us to streamline the troubleshooting process.

I use it every day and I was able to figure out how to use it with no training and there are resources on their Thwack site for more advanced monitoring setup.

I think there was only a couple times I had to open a support case for SAM and one time they got multiple engineers on the phone to get a better idea what I was trying to monitor and was able to point me in the best direction to monitor that system.

Alternatives Considered

AppDynamics was trialled in a shoot-out between New Relic and Dynatrace and just about edged New Relic simply for the ability to drill down to the methods and lines of code in the error monitoring, which is an invaluable feature for a development manager. New Relic Insights provides slightly easier dashboarding and New Relic generally is easier to use, but AppDynamics just came out on top.

If you work only with Microsoft applications and environment (or you need to focus on them above other applications), Microsoft SCOM is the way to go.

Otherwise, if your environment is large and diverse and you need a central and total monitoring, SolarWinds SAM is the best option for you.

Return on Investment

  • AppDynamics isn't cheap, but it definitely helps to ensure our applications and APIs are up and running without issue. The alerting is usually good but occasionally mixed, for example sometimes flagging a single error as a critical issue since the API is usually completely error free.
  • The cost saving in terms of trouble shooting and analyzing issues in production is fantastic - to know about issues before they are reported by customers enables you to be proactive in resolving them and ensuring maximum up time for our applications.

  • Server & Application Monitor has helped identify both current active issues and focus the troubleshooting where it needs to be.
  • Issues that might not be noticed can be identified before they become a issue.
