ASG-Remote Desktop

Best for users that have many desktops or servers they need to login to. Great in my environment of multiple clients and the need for fast login and resolution of their issue. If you have a large infrastructure or multiple clients, this is a product you need!

Pros

  • Organize remote desktop connections
  • Provide easy and fast connections
  • Backup and restore configurations

  • Allows users to run Windows only applications on their Mac without switching devices.
  • Fusion is excellent for Windows image creation, and works exceptionally well on the Mac environment.
  • Assists a Mac user to virtualize Windows apps.
  • Excellent for installing Linux distros for penetration testing.

Cons

  • Can be overly complicated at first, but you can add into the features as you build your organization skills

  • Running VMware Fusion in Unity on a Mac is not always reliable. Sometimes, launching a Windows app just does not work. Either it will not come up or will not run with the same settings I had I opened it in the original VM.
  • Continuing on Unity mode, it just doesn't feel as straight forward and simple as the rest of the program is.
  • Sometimes, after I have been using a Windows VM for a few months, VMware Fusion will say its messed up and ask me to try to repair it, and of course I can never get a successful repair, so I have to recreate the VM.

For Apple workstations VMware Fusion is the virtualization software to use. No other application (free or paid) can do what Fusion can. The features and constant updates make Fusion an application that cant be beat.

As I have said 3-4 times in this review, VMware fusion is the best application for system vitalization on Apple Workstations. I have tried all the others and you get what you pay for in the cases of free applications. Even when tested against paid options, Fusion is the best for me and my team.

Security patches and constant updates keep Fusion a leader. I have had to contact support 1 or 2 times and my issues were identified and resolved quickly.

Alternatives Considered

ASG-Remote is very flexible and with so many options available it makes the configuration you want for your setup super simple. Other products do not offer the extra features for database and reporting. As well, it offers all the connection types you can possibly think of. The ability to automate tasks for regular servers and workstations is amazing!

Virtual Box is a free option, so WMware Fusion is more robust and I'd say more reliable. It's also more appropriate for handling more complex VM setups

Return on Investment

  • Simple use and easy to set up
  • Fast connections means faster service to your clients/users
  • Easy to share across other users for connections
Tina Cline profile photo
  • With unity view mode, less experienced MacOS users have a simple mode to run their Windows software without having a different context.
  • Since it allows you to run Window's software on a Mac device, it allows users to have only one computer to use all the desired software.
