Axonify

Axonify is an excellent tool for any workplace that meets any of the following criteria:
  • Has very complex processes or that implements regular changes to policies or procedures (building spaceships, synthesizing plutonium, etc.)
  • Is in a highly regulated industry that requires regular compliance training (i.e. finance, childcare, medical, etc.)
  • Has roles with a high risk of injury necessitating regular safety training (warehouse workers, welding, etc.)
The reinforcement function ensures that workers are always aware and up to date of changes AND most importantly, learners are always working on improving their weaknesses. It is not an ideal platform for industries that are not highly regulated, do not have a high risk of injury, or for workers with very simple and consistent roles, since once it is learned there is a small probability that a worker will need a refresher on any of the content.

Coursera

It's absolutely ideal for programming. Today, most programming environments are available for free and enthusiasts can tinker with programming on their own. But Coursera structures that process and presents iteratively more complex assignments to the student.I found it useful for non-programming. I took a refresher Calculus course and the user was able to enter solutions symbolically which I found impressive.

Pros

Axonify

  • Great user interface. Intuitive. Simple. Clean look.
  • Easy to access reports that deliver well for C-Suite presentations.
  • Simple gamification structure with well-thought out reward design.
  • Amazing customer service team that passes on our feedback to design team and, get this, oftentimes actually implements our ideas. Gotta love that!
  • Bite-sized learning that is served quickly while maintaining high-quality.

Coursera

  • Coursera is very well organized. They are partnered with the most important educational institutions around the world.
  • They are very “up to date” in topics of interest and new courses.
  • Coursera has the widest catalog of courses, all of them with a certification given by them in name of a professional institution, like universities.
  • They also have programs together with universities that allow you to get a Masters Degree and Specializations. (Which is awesome)

Cons

Axonify

  • The chief complaint from my learning audience is that they cannot pick their path between options like daily questions, new topics, and exams.

Coursera

  • The problem with Coursera is the moderation in the forums. From the few courses I have taken, many of my classmates were criticized heavily or bullied by other classmates for asking questions in the forum. This hasn’t gotten any attention from the forum moderators which makes the community feel uneasy with helping each other.
  • Most of the courses and the related materials used to be freely available on Coursera. However, with the recent changes, some of the courses are categorized into specific tracks, and they are not free anymore. However I am glad that one can still audit the paid courses, but access to the course materials may be limited.
  • Some courses are only available on specific dates and I have missed out on classes I was really interested in.

Axonify is extremely easy to use, for both employees and managers. The platform is visually appealing, and Axonify offers a number of videos and tutorials for any administration and user functionality. The reporting is also very easy to obtain and review, with the ability to drill down to team and individual results.

Alternatives Considered

Axonify

There are so many training platforms and increasing numbers of non LMS training platforms that it can be very difficult to figure out what is best for you. It's been a while since I did all the research that led me to Axonify, but below is a short summary of the pros and cons of the platforms I looked at and how I decided to implement Axonify.
  • Compligo- This platform was recommended by the Director of Legal and Regulatory when I first joined my current company. Its main feature is that they provide training on legal and regulatory topics (this is very important to my organization) however, it is a very old school platform, the training tended to be very long, and there was no element of reinforcement. It felt more like "check the box" training than education our workforce, so I opted to continue looking
  • Docebo- This was my second choice. Docebo is extremely similar to Axonify in the learning philosophy but ultimately I chose Axonify. I won't give my exact reasoning because I'm sure both platforms have made considerable updates since I did my research and I don't want to cause confusion by posting out of date information
  • Inkling- Inkling is a very cool platform, but not quite as robust as I knew I would need, although I'm sure they have added functionality since I last tested the platform
now I am out of space, so I'll leave it at that.

Coursera

I think Coursera has the best overall interface. I think you will find that different platforms go in different directions, and have different specialities. For the most part the differences are more in the types of courses they offer than one being particularly better than the other, so it comes down to content for me.

Return on Investment

Axonify

  • The total cost of the operation has been favorable. We get much better usage of this product than any other product we've deployed. We've been able to use data from Axonify to undermine arguments that people haven't been trained.
  • We are still trying to get some SME's in the business to comprehend just how powerful the platform is.

Coursera

  • The greatest benefit of Coursera is access to quality courses on various subjects that you can either browse or dive in deeply. Customizable, flexible and accessible.
  • Helps our department to recommend trainees courses on this website and gain important knowledge. Also, the courses are provided by big-name universities which helps students in their careers
  • Developing and exploring professional skills.
