Cisco

Cisco SD-WAN is well suited to any scenario where highly available communication between multiple sites is required as long as they have routers from the same vendor. It is not recommended for scenarios where there are routers from different vendors, since normally each one manages its sd-wan, which prevents the communication from forming naturally.

Product has been around for a long time and the stability and features are excellent. Now that Oracle owns it, its long-term viability is both improved (given Oracle isn't going anywhere anytime soon), but all the layers of bureaucracy and auditing that Oracle is famous for comes along with it.

  • Failsafe- ability to aggregate low cost link and increase enterprise WAN bandwidth and also provide safe failor over in case of link interruption, with almost zero drops. In a lab test for voice it works perfectly for voice.
  • Config Change without system interruption (change config and apply it during Maintenance windows).

Cons

Cisco

  • The minimum subscription time is three years, which makes the initial investment of the projects more expensive.
  • The types of subscriptions that determine the accumulated bandwidth of the transport links generate a limitation to the additional solution that the hardware supports.
  • Access to the Vmanage administration console must be from a previously established IP address, which removes flexibility of access to the cloud.

Oracle

  • Talari Aware management solution very complex to set up useful dashboards
  • Management interface seems overly complex (7.3), though this was supposedly improved in 9.0

Since the Cisco SD-WAN tools are a part of Cisco’s broader portfolio of solutions, support cross-cuts to each of our deployed components, with our company as the customer having the ability to solve our problems through the same, approved infrastructure. Their support team easily satisfies the customer’s needs so that they continue to focus on business functions.

So far so good. I have no problems with support; they were able to deliver a good service to us every time we needed it.

      Alternatives Considered

      Cisco

Cisco SD-WAN is the simplest to implement with graphical user interface full configuration. There [are] also many automated parts of [the] configuration, like tunnels configurations and routes propagation. Cisco also brings its SD-WAN solution as a complementary solution to users already using Cisco equipment like Meraki and Firepower firewalls. This could be an advantage also.

While I haven't looked at Silverpeak in a long time and haven't used any of the other big players, this product is a dedicated SD-WAN solution, so no need to get a combination device, unless that's important. We will likely implement SD-WAN through our next firewall platform refresh as a backup to Talari.

      Return on Investment

      Cisco

      • Managing to use business applications efficiently causes us to get more value from our cloud subscriptions
      • Able to use streaming services improved employees' morale and increased their performance
      • Able to combine multiple connections, helped reduce costs, and prevented us from investing in only the most expensive WAN supplier
      • Instead of relying on one supplier when one connection was down, we managed to carry on with another broadband solution
