ConnectWise Automate

ConnectWise Automate is a fantastic platform for managing multiple clients, and I feel this is why it was created in the first place. I have ready complaints about certain components and behaviors in the past online. However, it appears they have fixed these issues in later versions as we have not experienced them. It also has competitive pricing for RMM's for MSP's to use. It could also be used for a single company to manage their environment, but I don't think it was meant for this. There might be other options that are more cost effective, especially if a single company doesn't have hundreds of machines to manage or more.

Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Microsoft Intune + SCCM)

It is well suited in organizations that are looking for an all-in-one Systems Management solution, that is well-known in the industry, and comes from a vendor that is also well-known, and that offers good support for this kind of product. It is less suited for organizations that want to use something right away, without a whole lot of setup/management on the back-end. This also wouldn't be suited for organizations that don't have funding for their IT folks to get formal training in the use of the product or have the time to read through the documentation, etc.

Pros

ConnectWise Automate

  • It includes a ticketing system using workflow automation, SLA, as well as performance monitoring and access tickets from mobile devices.
  • Dashboards of the tool show overviews and detailed explanations of KPIs. Your business can also use the custom report writer to generate reports on whatever issue you want.
  • You can use ConnectWise to automate the range of ITIL process, such as: incident management, availability management, change management, service reporting, service-level management, service asset and configuration management, request management, and knowledge management.

Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Microsoft Intune + SCCM)

  • Remote Control works well and does not require a lot of configuration. It must be understood that the Remote Control feature of System Center Configuration Manager is different from RDP, as it does not establish a separate user session and allows a tech to troubleshoot issues in a way visible to a user.
  • It is easy to add client devices for management, and multiple options are available (push, Active Directory, etc.)
  • It's modular and extensible. For example, a third-party company, Parallels, makes a System Center Configuration Manager plugin to manage Macs from the same console.

Cons

ConnectWise Automate

  • The biggest issue for Automate is their support. They seem to be completely overwhelmed. Chat support for simple questions can be anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes in the queue. Then when you are connected they are doing little more than creating a ticket that will take days to hear back from them.
  • Patching. The documentation and advice from our implementation person do not match reality. The process of denying a patch is documented, but doesn't work. We were unable to block certain patches from being distributed until we spoke to a specialist about it. He couldn't explain the mis-matched documentation.
  • Speed. Using the Automate client is painfully slow. Very sluggish and non-responsive at times.

Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Microsoft Intune + SCCM)

  • The licenses can be expensive if you are a small organization. Make sure you have a good deal with your Microsoft partner.
  • Deal with collections can be a little hard sometimes. Collections are the say the product classify or organize the groups. As the concept is a little different from what we're used to, like Active Directory Organizational Units or Security Groups, etc., it's best if you spend some time studying this before you deploy the product in your organization, especially if your organization has severy business or business units and remote sites.
  • You don't have as much product specialists as you have for other Microsoft products like MS Exchange, for example. So, make sure you hire a partner that have the skills needed to help you during the deploy of the product. Indeed, it is a complex product and it demands attention to details to avoid frustration in the future. People tend to save money on the implementation phase and that leads to frustration and, in some cases, projects cancellation due to underestimation of the requirements of the product.

Support and the Speed of supporting the latest technology is the main reason for not giving this a 10. But the product is powerful and flexible. The best way that I can sum it up is "You can get out of it what you put in to it"

Mascom Wireless is a Microsoft shop and SCCM has proved to be helpful in keeping our Microsoft products up to date every month without fail. We also have a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement which we renewed for three years ending 2022. The remote access utility works wonders for the organisation and have saved travel bills including subsistance allowance. We have been able to fulfill security audits both internal and external. We have been able to keep a robust inventory of our computer assets and nothing falls of the cracks

The UI is pretty confusing. There are Right-clicks, ctrl+clicks, Shift clicks, it's all very convoluted. With the latest gussying up, it's now arguably prettier, but very slow... I dread using it now...

It becomes useful to access the corporate data on the go or while you are outside the office. Data leakage is a serious problem, so Intune does the work for us. It provides secure access to company resources and data on the go and on our own mobile device. In this way, we can reply to client emails without any delay and the organization has full control over the sharing of data as per compliance policy.

It used to be great, but then they broke reporting, speed and responsiveness with version 11 and the new Patch Manager. It's really bad and their support people are way behind on fixing so many bugs. They have really gone downhill. If they don't get it together soon, we'll start looking around.

Due to SCCM being developed by Microsoft and meant to work with other Microsoft products, there has been no performance issues on servers nor client devices. We have done two upgrades without any unplanned downtime or issues, and there has been no requirement to roll-back any deployment or updates of SCCM due to any bugs or vulnerability found later. This is a well made product for specific use and specific platform. Other competitor products can do more and compatible with other Operating Systems, but if there is no requirement for that, SCCM is the best of breed.

Most of the time their support is good for smaller things. They have a chat assist which is a nice function. When you run into a larger issue or an issue with an integration the support becomes less reliable and inconsistent. Generally your wait time on chat is under 5 minutes.

Microsoft support is very quick in assisting with large scale or even smaller-scale issues. They are available 24/7/365 (depending on your support tier contract), which is really nice if your system goes sideways. I've used them a handful of times when something goes wrong. They are always friendly and helpful.

LabTech online training is very very thorough in training and helping individuals understand the theory and practical side of using a Remote Monitoring & Management. The training has multiple methods of explaining each section which helps to re-enforce everything about the Training Modules. I have had some Engineers lose their interest after a number of modules because they said that it was too much, that was too similar. I've found that the training is tailored towards a technical background but the Sales training does help NON technical individuals familiarize themselves with the Remote Monitoring and Management components and how it relates to Managed Services.

Start small and learn the in's and out's before making policies and rolling things out company wide. Ask the questions of why if you don't agree with something or your company does things a different way. Usually they are done a certain way for a reason. Start simple with roll out and slowly enable or add on the functionality that is needed.

Work with a "test group" of users who you have a good relationship with so that when things don't work properly they understand!Work with your partner nicely without forcing things especially timelines as you are bound to make mistakes and create oversights in the projectManagement can also interfere with the implementation (which can cause delays) if you make too many mistakes which takes me back to having a "test group" where you have good relations

Alternatives Considered

We prefer Automate to Kaseya for the customization, scripting and the third party integration. However, we prefer Continuum to Automate for how much time we freed up. We no longer have to maintain Automate services, integrations, etc. We also have reduced our ticket noise by 70%. This fact alone makes Continuum our favorite.

Microsoft System Center Configuration manager was always selected because it combines several standalone solutions provided by other vendors. Has great integration with all Microsoft services including Azure. Being an enterprise standard level product, you can expect that your IT personnel has experience with it and you don't need to spend too much time to educate them.

Return on Investment

ConnectWise Automate

  • Because using the program is at a very low cost, I have the ability to service any client and provide training to any client if they have a computer.
  • Saves travel time and expenses associated with travel to support/train clients. Also can be done at any time of day because of continual access.
  • Gives the client peace of mind to know that I can access and fix an issue with a workstation any time of the day, weekends, evenings when they are not available etc.

Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Microsoft Intune + SCCM)

  • Positive Impact #1: Leveraging the Remote Access feature, we can simply remotely connect to a users workstation to assist with any issues they may encounter. We have multiple locations, so it is a huge time saver in troubleshooting end user issues.
  • Positive Impact #2: ROI is different for everyone, but ours has been positive in that we dont have to travel back and fourth between building as often to assist users. This saves time, gas and ultimately money.
  • Positive Impact #3: After you have deployed all the SCCM agents SCCM will start performing its magic. Inventory of your hardware and software is readily available in fully customizable reports that you can provide upper management for tech refreshes, etc. We also use the reports to ensure we have the right licensing installed vs. the licensing we have purchased.
