dbForge Studio for Oracle

Whenever a user or DBA wants to compare schematics between two environments, dbForge is extremely helpful. This is useful during version or framework upgrades, a database upgrade, patch implementations, service package implementations, or any time to environments would be different. The time it would take to write and execute queries, and then compare is exponentially longer than it takes with dbForge, where this is done and you have an application that allows you to quickly identify incongruities.

FoxPro is good for data manipulation from files. It is easy to generate/design reports of those data.

  • Installation and configuration was a breeze, so it provided a quick return on investment.
  • It runs quite well on standard hardware.

Visual FoxPro (Discontinued)

  • It is very fast to access data in SQL, Access, and other ODBC languages.
  • It has a lot of great code examples available on the web for free.
  • It has a lot of wizards to aid in application development, both from Microsoft and from third parties.
  • It is a structured language, so supportable code is fairly easy to create.
  • There are still a lot of FoxPro experts available to call on if needed.

Cons

dbForge Studio for Oracle

  • The ability to parameterize searches more would be advantageous. For example, being able to specify to only look for certain columns, certain data type changes, etc.
  • The output reports from dbForge are very plain and could contain more detail, and perhaps be structured more like a pivot table form Excel

Support Rating

dbForge Studio for Oracle

dbForge Studio for Oracle 8.0
Based on 1 answer
Although experience here is limited, as only one question has been asked and answered promptly, the registration and licensing process was very smooth and professional. There are forums online that discuss dbForge issues, as well as a Facts and Questions section on dbForge's website, so product support does seem to exist if needed.

Alternatives Considered

dbForge Studio for Oracle

We found dbForge Studio for Oracle to be more stable and easy to use than both Toad for Oracle and RStudio, among others. There is still room for improvement, such as the MySQL debugger. In the past, we used MySQL Workbench, but the flexibility and robust tool set of dbForge Studio for Oracle won us over and there was no going back.

Visual FoxPro (Discontinued)

  • FoxPro beats Access in several ways. It is generally faster and leads to more supportable code.
  • FoxPro loses to the programming language C in speed and flexibility. You can run C on almost any platform out there.
  • FoxPro has better report writing and screen development tools than out of the box MS SQL.
  • Java beats Foxpro for web application development and platform flexibility.

Return on Investment

dbForge Studio for Oracle

  • It has allowed us to save time and money by enabling our developers to write more efficiently.
  • Again, the ability to synchronize databases and schemas is invaluable.
  • The speed at which our developers were able to use the product to produce results was outstanding.

Visual FoxPro (Discontinued)

  • Positive impact is that the value of FoxPro applications has continued to increase over the years, so we are in high demand for our services.
  • Negative impact is that sometimes you have difficult to support scenarios where you might have to spend many hours to just keep something functional.
  • A negative impact is that this language is taught in very few places, either in schools, or private learning centers.
