Dell EMC SC Series

Dell Compellent has a decent portfolio of products for varying sizes of business. Their licensing model is suited for those not wanting total a la carte fare, and administration is intuitive as compared to other storage arrays. This combined with Co-Pilot support gives Dell a good presence in a vast number of scenarios where networked storage is required over a DAS solution. It's only fallback is its own NAS solution, which itself may be better suited to smaller environments

Scale Computing HC3

Scale Computing is a great replacement solution for small to mid-size businesses which use other virtualization platforms. It is also a great solution for backup and replication. Companies looking to get more out of their investment into hyper-converged / virtualization platform will find Scale Computing's offering of Hardware, Virtualization Software, and a single Support agreement to be full and consolidated for overall efficiency in running and managing the IT Infrastructure. Scale computing also provides for future expansion and scaling of the infrastructure with minimal effort and cost. Scale's solutions offerings may be less relevant in very large scale data centers and companies that have adopted very specific virtualization solutions and built their own ecosystems. However, I would not be surprised if Scale is adopted in such large environments.

Pros

Dell EMC SC Series

  • Dell Compellent support (Co-Pilot) and the add-on service (Optimize) are critical services that Dell Compellent does very well. Alerts from the array are sent to Co-Pilot where tickets are automatically generated and customers are notified of events. Of greater importance at times is the proactive support Co-Pilot and Optimize provide by contacting us of inefficiencies in the array and consulting on resolutions.
  • Enterprise Manager (Dell's "single pane of glass" management framework) is a useful tool for configuration/evaluation of the array and other Compellent products.
  • Ease of management. From firmware upgrades to managing server volumes the process is much simpler than with other arrays.

Scale Computing HC3

  • Scale provides a solid worry free VM environment for any SMB. We were looking to upgrade our VMware environment and found it quite daunting trying to piece together all the components necessary for a vm environment as well as the inevitable support contracts that would be scattered across different vendors. Scale combines everything you need into one turnkey solution. One appliance, one vendor, one support contract.
  • Companies with a limited IT staff or who would rather free their staff from the administration concerns of a typical vm environment will benefit greatly from a Scale HC3. It truly is plug and play. Even the system updates are automated, moving vms around the nodes in realtime while each node updates with no disruption to the VMs.
  • Built in High Availability, built in Load Balancing. Storage, Servers, VM os.. it's all self contained.
  • Working with the VMs (creating, deleting, cloning) is easier on an HC3 than on anything else I have seen.

Cons

Dell EMC SC Series

  • Reliability. We had several times where VMFS luns would become corrupted and we'd have to move all VM's off to other storage
  • Performance. 1g iSCSI performance was abysmal (although the unit we used was an older device)
  • Management and Monitoring. Both management and monitoring are pretty primitive. We were never able to integrate monitoring into Nagios.

  • Automatic Exports. Although they have the ability to create scheduled snap shots, I am waiting on the tool to allow us to automatically create exporting schedules to a 3rd party NAS
  • Historical Reports, the Hypervisor allows us to see real-time reports of our cluster, but it would be nice to have detailed historical reports of this data to look for patterns in our software resources

I'm on the fence about renewing the support contract. The reliability of the HC3 makes it difficult to spend the cost of the renewal which is higher than the costs prior to Scale. I'm convinced if we were a larger district that the savings would be tremendous and I wouldn't hesitate to renew. In our specific situation, it may be more feasible to pay per incident.

The Scale Computing support is simply outstanding! I have only ever had to reach out for assistance on 3 scenario's when I forgot how to do something or was attempting to do something out of the norm. They were right there beside me and assisting me in any way they could; up and beyond what was needed from their end. They are always quick to reply and follow up within a few days if they haven't heard from me. To this day, 5 years after the initial sale; the team reaches out periodically to see how everything is going, if i have any suggestions or have any questions.

Purchasing the migration service or tool if one has older systems, a large number of servers, or coming from another VM solution would be a great advantage.

Alternatives Considered

Dell EMC SC Series

We selected Compellent solely based on price. Honestly I would rate it only slightly better than a QNAP we used (which was even cheaper). If performance and reliability are factors in your decision (and they should be) I would recommend looking at something like a VNXe.

When researching hyperconverged technology, we looked at several leading providers. In each case, the cost of the system far outweighed Scale Computing's, without providing any additional benefits that we could discern. In some cases, the same price at Scale would only purchase 2 nodes at another vendor, reducing our fail over redundancy. In other cases, only the hyperconvergence software was provided. When comparing prices to purchase the individual machines plus the software, Scale came out ahead again by a large margin.

HC3 is one of the best products I have purchased for our district. It is unbelievably reliable to the point that they shoot themselves in the foot on support contracts.

Return on Investment

Dell EMC SC Series

  • Switching to Compellent more than doubled the database performance of our main business application.

Scale Computing HC3

  • Scale was a much more cost-effective option than other hyperconverged solutions we looked, or when compared to the cost of refreshing our previous environment of HP servers and a SAN. And that is before you look at the cost savings of not having to pay for a recurring VMWare license!
