MediaFire

MediaFire is suitable for individual users that want to store and maybe share files. It has a good initial space in the free version that can be enough for most users. The same applies for small teams that want to store documents (text, presentations) and share it between members (FileDrop features can help increase collaboration and productivity). If you have a big team or want to store big files you have to upgrade to the business or pro version (the price is interesting).

WeTransfer

I would definitely recommend WeTransfer - especially the paid version. I feel like all of the shortcomings with the free service (file size limit & content deletion after 7 days) are all fixed when you upgrade your account, and the service is not very expensive. It only costs $12/monthly or $120/annually. WeTransfer makes it so easy to send files, and the additional features such as creating a link to your content & password protection are great. Very straightforward & easy to use.

Pros

MediaFire

  • Speed and ease to upload and download files.
  • Available for iPhone, Android, OSX, Windows, and Web.
  • Has no limit of downloads.
  • Give you a considerably large size of space within your servers.

WeTransfer

  • You don't have to sign up for an account, you can just use it when visiting the website.
  • It is really simple and straightforward to use.
  • It has never failed me.
  • It tells you when your files have been successfully sent and when the other person downloaded it.

Cons

MediaFire

  • The 10GB Overall File Storage Limit. I really don't like this and I wish it were a 10GB limit per file. But I understand Mediafire wants to have some sort of limit with the Free accounts.

WeTransfer

  • The price for Pro is a bit high.
  • A way for free users to save an address book.
  • The offline app isn't as robust as the web client.

As noted previously, sometimes it can take more than once to upload and share a file if you are using Chrome. It doesn't happen often but of course it always seems to when we are on a really tight deadline. It just takes patient in those cases

WeTransfer is extremely reliable 99% of the time. There has been twice in 4 years that their service was unavailable due to server outage for several hours.

I've only reached out to WeTransfer support once, but they were prompt, courteous, and answered my question. I assume that future interactions would be the same, I'm looking forward to being a long term customer.

Alternatives Considered

MediaFire

All of these solutions stack up pretty well but there are some differences between them. MediaFire is very easy to use and manage files and documents. With a 10 GB you can do many things and share many documents with the team or the department which is what made us decide to use it officially in our team.

WeTransfer

Dropbox is a terrible and slow service, so WeTransfer is the far better option between the two. Google Drive isn't as professional as WeTransfer (in my opinion) so using WeTransfer might be the better option.

Return on Investment

MediaFire

  • It has allowed me to easily share files with clients and friends
  • No computer client does make things a little slower/more complicated to upload to the cloud
  • Allows me to easily work on a project with someone else and recover a previous file in case of mistakes

WeTransfer

  • When we've had our BETA testing programs for our products, we always used WeTransfer to send our BETA version of our products. Doing this using WeTransfer was free and we also didn't have to worry about unauthorized people later down the road downloading these versions as WeTransfer deletes the files after a small number of days.
