It well suited for scenarios where you have users accessing applications from outside of the organizational premise for example we have field force representatives that visit different locations take orders and update data on their mobiles and tablets. so, it's very easy for them to simply open the app and input required data and its automatically sync with published web application and we are managing the authentication and authorization through Entra ID and conditional access through intunes conditional access policies.

Easy to implement and support. Flexible platforms and user-friendly interface. Not a lot of customization is available to customers and response time of support could be better. There are now competing products that utilize new features like facial recognition. Using camera and fingerprint sensors are becoming standard in smartphones so RSA SecureID should offer those as options.

Pros
Microsoft

Cons
Microsoft
  • Nesting of group membership does not allow email to be delivered to group members.
  • User profile properties are somewhat rigid, creating custom attributes could be much easier and more functional.
  • There are so many features navigation is somewhat challenging to remember if you are not a daily user.

  • Slow to provide updates to latest operating system versions.
  • While the GUI is clean and easy to use, it does look very dated.
  • There is not an option for a temporary code to log in. It would be nice for situations where you are at a remote site but don't have your device (laptop, phone, etc.) with you, as well as other situations.

It has been an essential tool and we have had very few problems using it. Nothing comes close that I have seen, though given how well it has worked out for us I really don't look very hard. The value is extremely high when you consider you get Microsoft Entra ID and the rest of the Microsoft 365 platform for one price.

Using it very frequently, it's important that its straight forward and I do not have to go through unnecessary hoops to achieve something seemingly simple. Can setup using the company credentials and do not have to setup up a separate account. Setup was fast and easy. GUI is very straight forward and quick.

Support Rating
Microsoft
Microsoft has offered Azure Active Directory as a solution for a couple of decades now, so they have seen and anticipated almost any issue that an organization may face and can therefore help. The cloud offering of Azure Active Directory offers some additional "self healing" or monitoring services that can minimize the need for a service call. However, as with most large companies supporting a fast growing market, there may be some gaps in service knowledge (and particularly processing) from the front line / tier one staff as they follow a corporate script at first contact.

Their support for onboarding and set-up is quite good. The only issues we tend to have are obtaining new user devices. These need to be planned ahead of time.

Make sure you use a good partner. Our implementation was a bit longer and more problematic than we expected. Our partner got it done, but, in my opinion, some of their inexperience and staffing issues were evident.

We reviewed Okta for identity management, but as we are an educational institution and receive a decent discount on Microsoft products, the price of Entra was hard to beat. Okta did have many of the features we were needing but the price just couldn't be matched.

Overall MS AAD is good but we have had a few too many reliability issues with the product that have lead to enterprise authentication outages over the last year. The Senior executives have a preference on Securid to be more reliable than MS AAD. SecurID does a better job in Integration for legacy on-premise applications for instance.

Return on Investment
Microsoft
  • Our organization covers Cyber Security insurance and as part of the review/auditing, we are able to save on insurance premiums since we implement the security features of Entra ID.
  • The ability to use conditional access policies helps us to increase security without negatively impacting our users. For example, we can require additional verifications based on geographic location of sign-in attempts. This means that users on our internal network can sign-in with MFA, but sign-in attempts from outside of the network require additional factors before being authenticated.

  • Implementing RSA SecurID has allowed us to help our clients understand we are committed to compliance.
  • Implementing RSA SedcurID has, however, negatively impacted employee productivity. Employees need to be aware of the additional steps they need to take to authenticate to a protected system.
  • RSA SecurID has helped us with our compliance audits.
