If you need to gauge whether your site is up or down, then Neustar will give you exactly what you are looking for. However, if you need more granularity for specific application or sub-systems and their functionality, this product will need to be subsidized with other applications that provide more data or information on how individual components or systems are working.

Site24x7

While Site24x7 can monitor almost anything, it is the most cost effective when using its basic monitor. The basic monitor covers certificate health, web sites/services, general server health, IIS health, and much more. The advanced monitors cover SQL, Microsoft Failover Clustering, etc. but even though we get three advanced monitors with the initial subscription, we don't use them because the SQL monitoring can be very noisy without some fine-tuning. It wasn't uncommon to get woken up at 3 am because of a SQL anomaly that tripped a metric.

  • It allows access to a history of checks, how much time they took, and if any errors were detected.
  • It can alert several people, or many in a group, for information related to the application availability.
  • When drilling down into the check, the logs can pinpoint the exact time and code events and how long each step took to respond.

  • Very clean website UI. Tests are well categorized and navigation is very simple.
  • The accompanying mobile app is very useful when on the go as it can also notify you of any issues.
  • The cost of the platform is very cheap and the cost also scales at a low amount.
  • No on-premise footprint. All cloud-based.

  • The interface can be buggy.
  • We have experienced false positives of a system outage that was not accurate.
  • It's not a true measure of system performance or uptime, but simply judges up or down from a holistic view.

Site24x7

  • Analysis: Site24x7 sends a report when a site is back up, with an "analysis" of the outage. The idea is to help pinpoint the cause, but it's almost always useless.
  • Overalerting on larger outages: Site24x7 sends an alert on every site that we have configured when they go down. A hierarchical setup would be better, or some way for it to recognize that if more than two sites are down simultaneously, it only needs to send one alert with that information. Getting 12 text messages at 1 AM is not fun.
  • Complex setup: It takes a long time to set up everything for monitoring. Automation would be nice.

Neustar Webmetrics

To be honest, I am not certain why this product was initially chosen over other products. It was being used when I started working at a new job. I was trained on its use and focused on tracking issues when an alert was given. There are many products that can be used for monitoring site uptime. Neustar definitely has its uses for monitoring if a site is up or down, but its lack of granularity can turn some away.

Each solution excels in their own areas. Site24x7 provides the easiest and most cost-effective transactional monitoring from the previous and existing solutions which we use. However, Solarwinds Orion suite, which includes the virtualization manager, gives us full-stack monitoring of our VMware environment, which Site24x7 cannot. In the same way, Cloudwatch gives us better visibility into our AWS workloads compared to SolarWinds.AlertSite was previously used for our transactional monitoring, and while the configuration of transactions and playback with Deja Click plugin was incredibly beneficial, it didn't justify the cost difference to Site24x7.

  • Our company at one time gauged overall system uptime using Neustar WebMetrics to provide this data
  • Due to the limitations with the applications ability to show system functionality and uptime we have begun using other methods for determining system uptime for our customers.
  • The interface can be a bit tricky to understand during first use. There is somewhat of a learning curve.

  • We are better able to be notified of critical downtime, allowing us to act faster to restore critical services/applications.
  • Sometimes we get flooded with emails due to false alerts and that can often be distracting to many of us.
  • Thanks to their add-on pricing scheme, it eliminates the need to buy expensive modules straightaway, thus saving money.
