Onshape

I come from using SOLIDWORKS for four years, and as much as I love it over Pro-E, I find Onshape has the same level of functionality in regards to part design. Assemblies are easier to make functional. Where OnShape really shines is that the integrated release management is significantly easier and does not leave any possibility for the release process to be done wrong. This is huge when being audited. You can also store any file type for design history records in OnShape. If you don't need release management and just design parts there aren't a lot of benefits other than the ease of access from anywhere on any device. OnShape is not perfect, but the problems cost less time and frustration than any other CAD I have used.

How many departments will be using the product? How does each department or area within any given company work with or rely on each other? You have to know or be able to create a streamlined approach to doing work for the PLM software to really work. The software adds a lot of necessary structure.

Pros

Onshape

  • Cloud-connected - we never have to worry about updating our design computers or upgrade the software as the upgrades happen automatically every few weeks. We are always on the latest version and get access to the newest features.
  • Analytics, we are able to see how we are using the tool, how long projects are really taking to complete and how much time we are spending in the system.
  • Extensible, we are able to use FeatureScript and write functions for our own features. We have used this to automate repetitive tasks so that we save time on designing features that we use over and over.

Siemens NX CAD

  • Seamless interaction across multiple departments.
  • The software allows you to create a very high level of control and organization within your engineering staff. This reduces the companies mistakes and maximizes productivity.
  • The software makes it very easy to track your product through every phase of the production cycle.

Cons

Onshape

  • Customization of background colors, currently the only option is a white background, which is not always the best to look at for extended periods.
  • Assembly configurations. At the time of writing OnShape has not added assembly configurations yet - which are very useful when designing industrial equipment for different markets.
  • Performance and features on 2D drawings. While this is improved with almost every update, unlike the 3D CAD part of OnShape 2D drawings are not as responsive or as feature filled.

Siemens NX CAD

  • Speaking from experience with NX, each revision seems to be focused more on the layout of icons as compared to the functionality of the features.
  • Features within NX that have been used for years are no longer being used as a result of new revisions. Doesn't make a lot of sense to the end user. It would be nice to know what the reason is on a much larger scale (ie large customer recommendation?)

Quick community support was available through the forum for most issues we found that weren't extremely urgent. We did not have to use phone support, so I can not evaluate that. However, we didn't have many issues arise, and any support we did receive was well thought out and timely.

Alternatives Considered

Onshape

Onshape wins out by far when it comes to the cloud and syncing aspect. I've had a lot of issues with SW epdm or trying to use Dropbox, or email, and anything that isn't stupidly easy to use is going to get used incorrectly. Onshape developed all of that right in, and it works amazingly.

Return on Investment

Onshape

  • I built my latest PC specifically to run Onshape as a professional and the total cost was $550. If I needed to run Solidworks or a similar local CAD program, that would have cost me upwards of $1500.
  • The yearly cost for Onshape Professional is $2100 versus $4000 for Solidworks (not including upsells).
  • Time-saving tools like Simultaneous sheet metal, mate connectors, and fantastic multi-body modeling tools let me create robust 3D models faster than in any other tool - saving hours a week.
  • Since it runs in the Cloud and on any device, I can bring my low-powered Chromebook with me and work anywhere I have internet.

  • Do not knowtotal investment cost, but there have been several projects where Siemens PLM software has both produced a better product and maximized production.
  • NX CAM has saved our machining centers thousands of hours and allows direct contact between the designers and the machine programmers.
