Pentaho

The tool is fast, visually attractive and intuitive to use, but we also have an implementation of Qlik Sense and Pentaho pales in comparison to the overall capabilities. I recommend the tool, but everyone’s solution need is unique, so it may not be the right fit. Larger tools like Qlik are more versatile and easier to recommend. More expensive, yes, but you usually get what you pay for.

Any scenario where you need to reach back into TIBCO support is something I would highly avoid. Most responses at the second round get you pointed to engaging their professional services. The general mentality seems to be "since our product acquisition cost is low, why don't you engage PS to get the value you need" If you are looking at enterprise scenarios, I would highly recommend looking at other more established products.

Pros

Pentaho

  • Being able to use the OLAP Analyzer tool saved our organization a lot of time in not needing to develop an OLAP tool on our own.
  • The ability to customize the tool and integrate all the internationalization we required was pretty straightforward.

  • Very intuitive tool - An Advanced reporting user can figure out in a day on the end to end operations.
  • Easy customization - Simple changes in UI makes it less headache for the end user who maintains the tool. Being an open source product (offers Jasper web services) makes a lot developer friendly compared to SSRS, Cognos etc.
  • Easy Connectivity - Can connect to any data source (can connect to multiple data sources) for a single report - can be customized.
  • Community - A very strong community available online, videos - on basic how to questions, also provides assistance to use case specific scenarios.
  • Ease of Reporting - Can create a reports with in few clicks with out struggle.
  • Domain Designer - A very powerful tool you can create a dataset using clicks with out writing SQL code.
  • OnDemand Scheduling - A very good scheduling feature and a has got lot more simplistic compared to other popular tools like Cognos.
  • Jasper Studio - Very good programmatic tool (desktop tool) lets you customize the reports more company specific, can embed complex coding with 3rd party languages like Java, Groovy (scripting language).

Cons

Pentaho

  • At first, one needs to learn the basic concept of this software before going for the implementation. Once you are an expert on this then you will rock it.
  • Some of the basic features need to be enhanced such as sharing and collaboration capabilities
  • Needs to support automatically generated analytic visualizations or models
Ilham AB profile photo

TIBCO Jaspersoft Community Edition

  • Easier to customize the Jasper Server GUI. More flexibility with the input controls look and feel and maybe more input control types to select from.
  • Have browser event functionality in the reporting itself.
  • An easier way to iterate through an object. Maybe an option that tells the report Java run-time to stop following the report sequential flow and first integrate through this stated object many times.
  • An easier way to create a list and add values to this list.
  • Maybe one could stipulate the process flow of what needs to be computed first in a given field.
  • The crosstab is a bit buggy on the Jasper studio side, so if that could be improved.
  • Better and more examples of custom components
  • The jive functionality on the tables needs an update. It looks so old and outdated.

I will use Pentaho until I find a better tool with a better, easier to use report designer client. For now, Pentaho has been the most powerful reporting tool for our clients because of its ability to connect to Odoo, integrate in Odoo (reports are accessible in Odoo) and the flexibility in report design and parameter integration

Even though there are challenges with Architecture, sizing and other areas with Jaspersoft provided that Jaspersoft comes up with the right set of innovation, performance, scalability, and documentation in future it will be great expansion (win-win) situation for the clients and as well as Jaspersoft.

I would have liked some hands on help in trying to match what Customers were already used to. Plus having a team of Java/BI folks was difficult to assemble since what required to be done in an object oriented fashion could have easily been done via a SQL construct. This hash of technologies was difficult to manage.

There is a lot of room for improvement, but the basics are easy enough for non technical end users to pick up. It does allow them to get started, but it requires a lot more effort to customise their reports after that. The online community is very limited as well, so there isn't a lot of reference material available through a simple google search. A lot of people would have to go through the support channels to do things, which ultimately means they don't end up doing it, unfortunately.

We are an Enterprise customer. They handle problems INSTANTLY when they are critical, including initiation an immediate WebEx screen share call when needed. Smaller/less-critical problems are handled within 1-2 days -- and NEVER fall off their radar, no matter how small. As needed, we can also leverage "professional services" from them -- much of which is included in our Enterprise contract. Finally, when a problem I have discovered turns out to be a bug..they create a JIRA for the fix, and make me a watcher. I love seeing notes come in showing me status updates of bugs filed because of something I found. They really are TOP-NOTCH.

Course Taken: DI1000 Pentaho Data Integration FundamentalsSetup A week before your class started, the instructor will start sending out class material and lab setup instructions. This is helpful so that you understand how the environment is laid out and can start reviewing the content. Ultimately it saved about a 1/2 day trying to setup with 10 other people online which was great! The CourseThe 3-day course was laid out like many other technical classes with 15-30 minutes instruction and 15-60 minutes of lab exercises. The instructor was very knowledgeable with the functionality from version to version and answered questions as we went along. I was amazed at some of the functionality that was available that I was not using at the time and quickly implemented changes to many existing transformations and jobs. The novice users seemed to catch on quickly and more experienced users explained how some of the functionality was used in their home environments. Towards the end there was enough time so that we were able to ask very directed questions about our own environments. Overall, I really found the class to be informative and deliver enough information to be dangerous. My skills improved and I was able to design better and efficient transformations for the HIE. While the training was somewhat beneficial, a lot of what was taught to us was what we managed to figure out in the weeks prior. It did provide some useful tips and reference material, but overall something more tailored to our requirements would've been better.

Get the right people in before starting implementation. Start small and build as you go approach is time consuming and involves lot of rework.Evangalize within the organization the capabilities and limitations equally so that correct delivery expectations are set.Set expectations with the Customer that the tool cannot replace proprietary software in terms of stability/usability and that timelines could change given the new ness of the product.

New releases can be very buggy, also lacking when it comes to standard time zones and formats that are outside the US. As a company we never feel comfortable implementing a new release for at least 3-6 months due to errors that are found

Alternatives Considered

Pentaho

I was not with the company when they selected Pentaho over any other tool. As per my experience, I would recommend Pentaho. One of the reasons are that it is open source. If you know JAVA, you can create your own plugins. I have found its customer support pretty good and quick. And the most important thing is the cost. If you are not using the DI server, you can just use the community edition and it should fulfil your purpose too.

Crystal reports is very expensive and does not integrate well with java based servers. Jasper also provides community edition, if we every want to downgrade the use, we always have the option of eliminating the server and using the reports as they are. Jasper also give you the opportunity to build BI on case by base basis including Dashboards.

Return on Investment

Pentaho

  • It's cheap. The version we have is free, so it has an immediate positive impact on ROI in that regard. However, a lot of our developers don't like it, which eats away our ability to be effective and productive.
  • It gets the job done. It may not be the most elegant tool, but for our purposes it works. There are probably better tools out there, and Pentaho has limited capabilities, but at the end of the day it works well enough.

TIBCO Jaspersoft Community Edition

  • Jaspersoft Community Edition has not had any significant impact on our ROI as we have purchased the commercial edition of the product.
  • The only impact on ROI is that when we bring on new developers, he or she can begin work using the community edition while awaiting the installation of the commercial edition.
