We tried Backblaze. The backup schedule and management is not as good as Crashplan. But it's much cheaper. Also it is not 100% compliant with our security policies. We already use Google Drive for sharing and team working. We ask our users to put their sensitive files there, but it's not always done. Also Google Drive does not have the best retention policy.

We selected CrashPlan because of my personal experiences with the company. I had had CrashPlan in the home for the past 3 years before being implemented at D+H. We looked at a couple others and none came close to the user experience and the admin tools available to support the users.

Allows us to manage ALL of our devices within one simple console. Server restores, desktop restores, legal holds and file searching. This software does it all without any nickel and diming you on cost.

We tried out both Mozy and Carbonite before choosing Crashplan - it was the simplicity and power of the backup application that led us to pick Crashplan. Backups and restores just made sense and the application was organized in a way that was easy to navigate and understand. The fact that we could encrypt the backups with our own encryption key was also a factor in the decision - we store some sensitive data as part of our training and have a need for that functionality.

  • Windows Backup, rsync and Time Machine
These were the default ad hoc backup systems used before we implemented CrashPlan. While each can be made somewhat reliable, depending on user habits and practices, none provide true continuous versioned backup, none allow a single administrative overview, and only Time Machine allows easy recovery of lost data by the user.

If you don't need the old computer (Crashplan backs up only user files by default anyway) you may want to go with a synchronization system. Having the file both online and synched on multiple computers makes it easy to work on. No matter when or where, you can work on your important files. CrashPlan will only back up. However, with those tools, you only sync one folder (or need complex configuration). With CrashPlan you'll get the documents, favourites, desktop, etc.

We also use Barracuda Backup and Veeam Backup in our org and while both have their niche, we found ourselves constantly running out of space on the Barracuda appliances when trying to backup non-critical systems (our classification for systems with important data, but not data we can't live without). When it came to VEEAM, it was great for virtual machines, but less so when it came to full workstations. They have the free full-client backup app, but it's of limited use to us. Crashplan fit the niche of letting us use our own backup storage without charging us for the privilege, leaving the Barracudas to the more mission-critical data, while covering the full workstations that VEEAM didn't do well.

I switched to CrashPlan from Mozy roughly two years ago to get away from an arduous provisioning process and a per-GB pricing model. We were looking for something that was reliable and something that we could price consistently so that our customers wouldn't be surprised by a large bill just for having some extra data.

We tried (actually purchased) one of these competitors first and had a terrible restore experience on a laptop used by one of our VPS. We tried CrashPlan and once we did, we bought it immediately.
