Our finance and senior leadership team use MIP Fund Accounting to advance data-driven decisions across the organization, increase the ability for our organization to obtain grant funding and a shared service model. The software's robust feature set including incredible import/export functionality, available software integrations and the allocation module allow us to have three staff members accurately record over six million transactions ever year. Implementing the software has enabled our organization to quintuple our grant funding and share services cash-flow.
  • Allocations - incredible automation for extremely complex approaches.
  • Ease of use - import features and data entry are made easy.
  • Reporting - management reports and available chart of accounts complexity allows deep insights into data.
  • Imports - importing, while easy and consistent to do, is a bit difficult when required fields use multiple zeros.
MIP Fund Accounting is suited for larger, and small-medium size organizations looking to grow who have a desire to make decisions based on data. It's less appropriate for organizations who require only general bookkeeping.

We use MIP for payroll, accounts payable, and financial statements. It is flexible enough that we have been able to grow and change and still use the same software to accommodate all our needs. We have added various components as they became relevant to our programs, which allows us to only spend the money necessary for our current needs.
  • The pre-set reports are helpful and there are many options.
  • There are many trainings available to help prepare new employees to use the software.
  • Short-term disability payments have always created an issue. There aren’t any easy steps to follow, especially since there are multiple ways insurance companies handle payments.
  • It would be nice if you could pick which states were relevant so you don’t have to wait for all forms to update.
Very small organizations may find the pricing to be a little high for what they need, but organizations with any type of complex accounting will find it very useful for reporting and tracking by various elements.

We use MIP in the accounting department. We currently manage: journal entries, accounts payable, budget, and the creation of financials statements.
  • Financials Statements
  • Reports
  • Accounts Payable
  • Journal Entries
  • Better Purchasing functions
  • Improve the dashboard section
It is very good for the creation of financials statements. I think the HR section and payroll can be improved more. Also the purchasing section needs improvements. I think the software needs to be updated a little bit to the needs of the users and technology. Also, the software needs to have an employee web reimbursement section including the app.

MIP is only being used by our accounting department at this time. Our uses include accounts payable, accounts receivables, bank reconciliations, monthly journal entries, creating budgets, monthly and yearly financial statements, importing general ledgers, historical data, monthly reporting for our communities, audit reporting, and producing yearly 1099s for our accounts payable vendors.

  • The Expanded General Ledger is a great tool. We can put together reports for anything we need.
  • We have a lot of different grants and therefore have to set up lots of different coding and MIP accommodates for that very well.
  • It allows me to enter as many batches of Accounts Payable as I need.
  • I would like to have more search options under the Expanded General Ledger. For example searching for a specific amount of an invoice.
  • Setting up new reports isn't always user friendly.
  • When I am looking up vendor balances I would like to be able to print a report right from that page with the totals.
If you need to do a lot of reporting, MIP Fund Accounting is great. Importing general ledgers is a great function that saves lots of time. It is very user-friendly when it comes to entering accounts payable and printing accounts payables checks. We have a lot of monthly journal entries and that is also very user-friendly.

Currently the accounting department uses MIP to manage its $20 million dollar budget of federal and state grants. We have used it for 17 years. We integrate payroll, encumbrances, budget, and bank reconciliation with the general ledger. We use a 6 segment coding system which allows us to report financial information in many different ways for management and external funders.
  • I like the payroll module for complete integration with General Ledger and Bank Rec.
  • I use customized reports to design budgets vs. actual for funding sources by category.
  • I use the encumbrance module to track obligations for the organization. 70% of our business is subcontract and training vouchers. This feature helps me manage real-time budget balances.
  • We don't have any recommendation for improvement.
I think MIP is well suited for any non-profit organization that is required to do fund accounting. Its structure allows tracking by funding source and also agency-wide reporting.

It is being used as our GL and financial accounting software in a department of two, plus two executives who look up data.
  • Provides both canned and DIY reporting
  • Has easy bank reconciliation feature.
  • Provides drill down features from the ledger to the support documents
  • Multi-user capability
  • Provides for reasonably priced check stock
  • Knowledgeable online or phone support
  • Lower the cost of training.
  • The summary statement of activities has to use extra lines since it uses summary lines, basically negating the benefit of a summary statement.
  • The account balance reports use blank spaces in the headers (e.g. dollar amounts and column headings), so that in Excel I have to always manually delete the blanks to make it a useful Excel report.
  • Still struggling with ease of online help/chat room, so I just pick up the phone.

Well Suited for basic accounting/GL software and do not have a million bucks to spend.

Less appropriate for very small operations where the Peach Trees of the world will suffice.

MIP Fund Accounting (Online) is used at ELAW primarily to track incoming grants from individuals and foundations and subgrants we make to international NGOs.
  • Provides detailed reports of which organizations we have made subgrants to. When we first purchased MIP it was one of the few packages on the market that could handle subgrants to international NGOs.
  • Support for Mac OS is less than ideal, requiring us to run a Terminal Server Client and connect to a Windows Server hosted by Abila. This process sometimes fails, locking up our single user license and it can be difficult to reach a support person in a timely fashion to unlock our license to allow our bookkeeper to log in again.
  • The user interface is somewhat clunky, out-dated and non-intuitive.
The hosted version of MIP Fund Accounting has freed us from managing the server in-house, however the Terminal Server access required for use with Mac OS computers feels like an afterthought.

It's being used by our finance department for all matters of finance. At this point, it is not being used by the whole organization but that may be done in the future. The finance department records all transactions in MIP and it is used to pull reports as well.
  • The update process is very seamless when upgrading the software
  • It's a well written application and it works pretty fast
  • The user interface is very intuitive and is easy for new users to learn
  • Ability to run a report asking for invoices that were created in a specific time period. There is no possible way to run a report for that.
  • If you're running a report and you try to get back to the beginning of the report you have to close the whole thing to get back to the beginning - very frustrating.
  • Copying and pasting doesn't work from the description of the invoice to the line item. This is time consuming.

It's well suited because it keeps balances of spread sheets, if I make a mistake an adjustment can be made very easily.

Where it is less appropriate is where copy and paste don't function like it would in Word. So if you make a mistake you need to delete the whole row.

We use MIP Fund Accounting in the Finance Department to process receivables, payables and manage the general ledger. We also use the fixed asset module. We generate financial statements and budget reports for each department. We did purchase the Budget module, but have not used it. We develop budgets and projections in Excel. Financial reports are generated in MIP then exported to Excel. This enables us to create custom formatting of the reports in Excel.
  • Departmental financial reporting
  • Historical reporting
  • Cross fiscal year reporting
  • Transaction detail
  • The Fixed Assets module is somewhat difficult to use with respect to disposals
  • In A/R posted transactions there is no dollar amount posted
  • When requesting posted transactions, all items appear, not just the one being requested
  • A/P vendor history displays in date order by clicking the tab at the top of the column. However, a printed version does not come out in date order
  • We have had problems matching the A/R aging report to the General Ledger
  • The drill-down feature should be expanded to areas other than financial statements
MIP Fund Accounting is well suited for nonprofits that need to do financial reporting by cost center. It is also well suited for financial reporting that crosses fiscal years (such as foundation grants).
The basic MIP Fund Accounting package does not appear well suited for electronic bill payment. The Budget module does not offer the flexibility of an Excel-based budgeting and projection system.

We currently use MIP Fund Accounting in our accounting department and are looking into extending modules for our procurement department for assets. Most recently they were using Premiere Depreciation. We have been using Sage (prior to MIP) products for years. We had even looked into the HR module and would be interested in doing so again... with the understanding it would tie into MIP Fund Accounting. It does everything we need.
  • From a systems admin point of view it is very easy to install and work with.
  • It connects to AD users so there's no need for users to remember multiple passwords (keep in mind this is from an IT perspective).
  • They constantly work to streamline the interface to enhance productivity.
  • There was a decision to speed up the querying process where results were truncated to a certain number of returns. This caused some frustration with our users who were used to doing things a certain way. The option to toggle would have been nice. I wish I could be more specific of the area... but in general, when taking a feature away, if it could be toggled.
I wouldn't know how to answer this from a user perspective, but it has been well suited to meet the needs of our institution. That may actually be its strength... is to cater to a small to medium sized entity. I would imagine a large organization may meet more limitations than we have ever experienced.

I'm working in the Finance Department at Unity Care Group. I am very pleased to write some good words for MIP and their helpful team. We all use MIP. The accounting software is matching well to the of our business. It is used in our A/P, Billing and Data Analysis Department, as well in G/L and Accounts Management. It has a the G/L and the coding for the variety of programs we use. It gives us the accurate picture of the expenses via different programs, accounts, as well the the billing. As an A/P professional I am finding all the coding systems very useful. In this way our G/L professional is able to overview and reconcile the different accounts.
The professionals from MIP are very supportive and helpful when we need them, and always ready with a decision. I have been asking them, and I learned from them a lot. We are always open to new solutions and to new effective ways to improve in our day to day job.
  • Good coding system matching well to the business.
  • Good Report system.
  • Good Accounts management.
  • Helpful team.
  • As we are located in CA we have to deal with the time difference... after 3pm if there is a problem we have to wait until next business day.
  • Sometimes there are technical problems - slows down, or not working at all.
  • I would like to have more flexibility with the check printer.
I like how fast I am able to process a payment and issue a check to the vendor. I can bundle the invoices, print the checks in different check runs. I like the memorizing way, and I am able to process 100-200 checks/week in a more efficient way. I would like when memorizing entries to find some more efficient way to do it. And more flexibility with checks printer.

MIP is used for the whole organization. I am able to quickly look historical items up for other managers using the GL system. I can also generate reports for our management team. I reconcile the bank accounts easily using MIP.
  • MIP helps me to get ready for my annual audit by allowing me to export general ledger items to Excel to do my analysis.
  • Budget entry allows for financial statements to be printed with budget amounts and variances.
  • It is easy to do monthly bank reconciliations in MIP.
  • Currently, I am unable to email reports to anyone because there is an error code that has not been fixed. I have to export to Excel and then email.
  • It would be nice to have a drill down feature in the general ledger.
MIP is great for tracking multiple funding sources. If you only have one funding source, MIP might be too much for you.

We use it for our entire church, I currently have 30 different funds that I need to keep track of using MIP. We use it for payroll, AP, and budgeting.
  • Payroll is really easy to do and the year-end reports, W-2s and 1099s are awesome
  • Accounts payable is a breeze
  • Budgeting worksheets are so easy to use
  • It would be nice if the W-2s and 1099s were easy to use. You have to go in and download everything then you have to double check it and make any changes. Very cumbersome.
  • Being able to group reports for all my funds so I could do reports for them all at once instead of one at a time.
  • Budget reports could be improved so that they can be manipulated for more information and better use.
MIP is perfect for churches or non-profits to use. The lists and reports are wonderful.

It is used across the entire organization and is used as our financial recording keeping system.
  • Ease of use, training is a snap.
  • The segment reporting allows the organization to look at financial data in a variety of formats.
  • The budgeting module is weak, we still use Excel to compile budgets and download the data to MIP.
  • The foreign currency module handles the accounting really well, but reporting is weak.
MIP Fund Accounting works well in any size non-profit organization.

MIP Fund Accounting is the primary accounting software for our organization. As we are a non-profit corporation we use the AP module the most. We are planning on implementing the Payroll and Inventory modules in the future. We have used the software now for the last 10+ years and with each upgrade the product has gotten better.
  • Database management is easy to incorporate and switch between different accounts if necessary. Attaching a new database is easy if you understand the SQL language.
  • Software installation is fairly painless if you host your own system and the new upgrade/update process works great. When I first started here the update process could be fairly nerve wracking but no longer.
  • Data entry is straightforward and the layout of the software makes it easy to follow steps required. Reporting in system is ample and allows you to customize to get the information you require.
  • My main complaint with MIP as well as other software titles is the constant addition of new features when I feel more attention should be devoted to current features. I realize that the world is changing but I am not convinced that easy access to accounting software is necessarily a good thing and actually could be a security issue.
AP management is excellent and generally requires our agency about three days to process a check run. This is a big thing in that we manage multiple grants which require division among different accounts which is another strong point of the software.

We use this for our fund accounting. We are a Headstart [program] and have a lot of funding that we need allocations on and have been very happy with this product and would recommend it. From using payroll to general accounting and reports it has been user-friendly. Running reports and getting the information we need is incredible.
  • Reporting - stock reports are great.
  • Ease of use - very user-friendly.
  • Accounts payable and receivable - all the modules are very helpful and really do the job for you.
  • It would be nice in the stock reports to be able to select any of the fields available.
  • The statement balance could have more user-friendly features. It seems like it gets confusing using it.
Payroll is able to use the EWS online payroll to have staff enter timesheets. Since we have gone to the EWS it is such a wonderful feature and the employees love to be able to get their own information without having to check with HR or PR. It would be hard to go back to manual. If you are not using it you need to update to it.

It is used by the accounting department to support the organization. The organization has 54 chapters and affiliates, 9 regions and 8 national departments that are reviewed and the financial information consolidated for the monthly financial reports. The multiple programs are easily tracked by using project codes and the reporting is easily accessed.
  • Reporting is easy and can be easily customized to meet your need.
  • Learning the system is easy and easily managed through the Administration modules.
  • Annual maintenance supports all service needs and includes updates and new modules.
  • Completing the 1099 process is complicated.
  • Check writing does not provide the correct next available session ID when checks are generated manually.
  • Updates are easier and there's no need for an IT staff to complete it.
It is well suited for tracking different projects across different years.

We use MIP Fund Accounting with three of our companies. The parent company is a complex company with many departments that have numerous grants that are being tracked. The ability to create your own reports makes it easy to get the information that you need. This software can be simplified for the less complex companies. The MIP Fund Accounting has allowed us to use the same software for many ventures.
  • The ability to track our clients with each grant and projects.
  • The feature of re-occurring invoices in payables as well as receivables.
  • Being cloud based has made it very flexible on work hours. The ability to allow our staff to work remotely.
  • The online access can have problems with speed. We have found that MIP's servers have had times of over use and struggle.
  • Accounts payables shouldn't default to 30 days. Suggest to default to 0 days then you can change. Most companies now are due upon receipt or 10 days.
  • Accounts receivable is not user friend. For simple transactions it takes many enters. Need to find a simpler process to post a deposit with one entry and still have the ability for customer history and each transaction history. Currently if you want this history you have to go through too long of a process.
This software gives you the ability to have a coding structure that allows you to take one grant and code it to a source, a department, a project, if it restricted funds, as well as the participant involved. The level of the reporting structure has helped our reports to our funds and helped us with our productivity as well as our turn around time on grant reporting.

We use MIP Fund Accounting to manage all of our general ledger account functions. We only use it within the accounting department and primarily to manage our GL and Accounts Payable. Our AR is entered into the system but we do not like the invoice interface. Additionally the budget and projections are kept outside of MIP as we have found it bulky to work with. Financial statements are prepared in Excel after a Trial Balance Report is run out of MIP.
  • It is accurate
  • Too many postings. For example to cut a check you need to post the AP batch (even for a single check) and then post again for the check run. There are so many steps to do a simple transaction.
  • Reporting is not intuitive and it is hard to figure out how to get a report that will give you the information that you need. I find that I have to run multiple reports to figure out if it has the correct information.
  • Actual dates and effective dates, if these get out of sync for any reason it is very hard to correct and I find having two dates to be unnecessary.
I don't find it to be an intuitive software. We have unique general ledger coding that is mandated by the state that it is able to handle but the system itself is hard to navigate.

MIP is used for our accounting department specifically, for payables and receivables
  • MIP works well with importing and exporting reports from and to Excel format.
  • Great for tracking general ledger activity making reconciling GL accounts manageable.
  • It would be great if we did not have order forms from MIP to process 1099s and could use the generic IRS forms distributed annually.
MIP is great for processing and tracking invoices in accounts payable. One improvement that could be made in the Display Balance feature is to expand the searchable filters. It would be great if Document Description could be made a searchable filter instead of only Document Number.

MIP Fund Accounting was used to identify a variety of scenarios where investing our money as a nonprofit might be spent in order to achieve various outcomes. It allowed us to simulate options and be better informed in making the decision of where our allocation of money would go as to optimize its use.
  • Data conversion from our previous system to MIP Fund Accounting was made as seamlessly as possible. We were able to successfully integrate without trouble and leaving us with continuity in our data.
  • The help that we received in developing SOPs for our growing organization proved difficult prior to using the help from MIP. Once we were up and running with the service we got what we needed and were able to make our organization's procedures as ordered as a larger and more established company would have.
  • The ability to see where our funds would most effectively be spent helped us utilize them so that we could make best use four our investors.
  • Understanding the permissions assigned to employees got confusing at times.
Aliba MIP Fund Accounting would be good for a growing non-profit organization that wants to free up time to focus on their mission by enabling automatic privacy controls, organizing funds to decide where money goes and taking data from an existing system to use in MIP.

MIP is used by the accounting department. The reports provide results to operating programs and billing information to funders. Additionally, board reporting is clear and understandable.
  • It always balances debits and credits.
  • It uses a minimum of computer and server resources which makes for fast response time.
  • The software provides many levels of access and control of users.
  • The modules allow for customization of the software to fit the organization's needs rather than having to change the company's procedures to fit the software.
  • The initial setup cannot be changed or made to adapt to the organization once installed. I have used Abila in two organizations and in one had to make substantial changes to the initial structure as experience was gained in its use.
  • While it is a true multi-user system, it does not multi task very well. For example, the operator must wait for a report to complete before any other task can be started. If one user is using a report template, others are locked out.
MIP is perfect for the established agency (NFP or government) that may have programs and/or grants that do not conform to a fiscal year or years. The modular construction and drop down lists make learning and training fast and easy. I think it would work in the for profit world as well.

Small NFP agencies might find it expensive to acquire and implement.

It is only used by the finance department. It will allow us to generate the management report and financial statement every month by customizing to our needs. It is user friendly software for producing 1099s. Also, it is easy to merge vendors without losing the history of the vendor activities.
  • Easy to use its accounts payable modules.
  • It will recognize the double entries for the same invoice and gives you a warning if you enter the same invoice twice which is a great feature.
  • Easy to reverse the posted session and correct the entry.
  • Producing the report without manually customizing the report.

It is well suited with the integration with other AMS software.

I wish we had sub-accounts in MIP so we did not have to create a new program code with every grant we receive.

We use MIP as our main accounting system to manage our federal and state grants. It is primarily used by our finance staff and CFO only.
  • MIP's functionality for our office includes fund accounting, grants managements, payroll, human resources, and timekeeping.
  • It allows us to report on multiple cost centers for multiple organizations and programs across all grants on the federal and state level.
  • The imbedded reports writer provides extensive reports and you can customize them anyway you want them or your board wants them.
  • Sometimes pulling reports or building the reports to give you the results you want is difficult to achieve.
  • Creating budgets was a challenge at first as was updating those budgets when revisions occur.
  • We would like to see a copy and paste function added so when entering or changing descriptions you don't have to continually keep typing them over and over.
I think it is great for fund accounting and grants management. We manage multiple federal and state grants so using MIP helps keep everything in order. We also love the fact that we can process our payroll, use MIP's timekeeping system and it holds all of our HR data as well. It's like a one-stop shop!

Our organization uses MIP to manage multiple grant funding sources in multiple locations. The best part of MIP is the reporting flexibility. The reports allow me to look at the financials from many perspectives and make decisions on good facts. I also like that you can specify date ranges for looking at information and set so many levels of detail.
  • MIP reporting allows for many levels of detail, from including funding, gl, taxonomy, location, or just looking at location, or by gl, or by taxonomy. It allows you to look at reports from many perspectives. Its a strength for management to have usable information.
  • I like the way you can change the dates specific types of entries are allowed. Its a strength as you are closing grants and years so that you know something you reconciled will not suddenly change. You can go back and make it available again if needed.
  • I really like the Session Manager feature. To be able to completely reverse a session is so quick and easy. But there is still the audit trail. Has saved an enormous amount of data entry when trying to correct a misposting.
  • I wish it was a little simpler to reverse a single invoice during the AP void check process.
  • In the payroll system improved reporting, being able to pull information from both the employee profile and the payroll system would be appreciated.
  • The ability to hide discontinued vendors from selection lists. As well as some way to improve vendor id conventions.
It is perfect for non-profit fund and grant accounting. To have the flexibility with the GL Account segments is fabulous. MIP is perfect for companies with many different departments or functions or grants. It would be less appropriate in a small business setting where things are straight forward.
