What is Recurly?

Recurly is a subscription billing platform and manages customer communications via email, business performance monitoring, and account changes. A merchant bank account is required to work with Recurly. A payment gateway is part of the product but it integrates with other gateways, such as PayPal, to give shoppers a more comprehensive suite of payment options.

Good Subscription Billing Platform

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Recurly is used as a subscription management and billing platform for us. The platform allows us to automate free trials transitioning to paid billing subscriptions. Recurly also provides invoicing, automatic recurring billing, collection, and billing account management as well as easily reconcile revenue.

We use Recurly to manage our paid subscription business. Recurly's built-in reporting is a game-changer, giving us instant metrics to measure results and identify areas in need of attention.

Pros

  • The ease of running reports with clear charts and graphs makes it easy to spot trends.
  • The ability to add new products or subscription packages can be created & made live in minutes.
  • Exporting customer lists and subscribers can be done in seconds.

Cons

  • The Recurly system logs you out in minutes if it sits unused, which leads to users having to constantly log-in.
  • Recurly does not allow for Google Analytic tracking all of the way through the checkout process.

Return on Investment

  • Since beginning with Recurly, our paid subscription counts have improved 7%. This is largely driven by the ability within Recurly to test various promotions and subscription pricing.
  • The ability to have transparency in our monthly recurring revenue numbers have allowed us to accurately manage and forecast our subscription goals.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Recurly to manage our paid membership programs. It does a great job of handling the various billing cycles (monthly quarterly annually) across our two membership programs.

Pros

  • The API allows for custom integrations
  • The reporting suite covers a lot of questions asked by our business
  • Web portal is designed well

Cons

  • Its difficult to pull data back into our data warehouse for further analysis

Return on Investment

  • The API has allowed us to build a "My Account" portal for our members which allows them to view and manage their subscriptions.
