What is SolarWinds NPM?

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) delivers comprehensive network fault monitoring and performance management that scales and expands with a company's network monitoring needs. Users can collect and view availability, real-time and historical statistics from routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and any other SNMP-, ICMP-, or WMI-enabled devices directly from a web browser.

The vendor states that SolarWinds users can get a full NPM installation up and running the same day they download, and that implementation does not require a team of consultants. NPM provides visibility into the health of network devices and servers on the network, ensuring that users have needed real-time information to keep their network running at peak performance.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is mainly used to monitor core router interfaces, especially facing DIA connections. It is also configured to trigger email and text alerts when a bandwidth threshold is reached. Once a bandwidth abnormality is reported, SolarWind NPM is used to drill into traffic and find which endpoints are using a high amount of bandwidth.
Pros
  • Sort bandwidth usage from endpoint IP address or Interface.
  • See type of traffic passing important interfaces. Using SolarWinds NPM we were able to identify a unusual IPSEC issue which was affecting our entire network - and resolve it.
  • Drill down to exact time periods to see throughput.
Cons
  • I would like to see BGP related information in SolarWinds NPM.
Likelihood to Recommend
I would recommend SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor for any situation, except for small networks where it is not worth the cost.

We currently use SolarWinds NPM to monitor various attributes of our network routers, switches, and firewalls such as the network uptime, device health, and interface bandwidth and errors.
Pros
  • Extremely intuitive and easy to use.
  • Very robust and flexible with granular customization in how you want to set up the GUI interface.
  • The GUI web application is very responsive and "snappy."
Likelihood to Recommend
If you want an easy to use and granular web app to monitor your network infrastructure, then NPM is your answer.

As a network architect consultant, I manage the monitoring and SLAs of the CRIF group's network--a network of over 1000 multi-vendor nodes. SolarWinds Orion NPM allows me to monitor all network devices with proactive managed alarms. It also allows me to analyze traffic in case of network issues thanks to the Live performance feature. Configuration of a new device to monitor is very simple, and it's very easy to create custom detailed reports to help the management have a global view of the network and traffic status.
Pros
  • Simple discovery of multiple nodes to monitor
  • A lot of graphical snippets to represent data
  • Customization of dashboard
Cons
  • Missing the ability to create a partition to give separate customizable environments to different groups
  • Traps triggered alerts can be done only on the TrapTools, not in the web interface
  • Custom maps can be done only on the Atlas tool, not in the web interface
Likelihood to Recommend
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is well suited in a multi-vendor network with at least 50 network devices and is less appropriate in an environment where network traffic is not very critical.

SolarWinds is used to monitor all of our network infrastructure along with some key areas of the network out side of it. SolarWinds is being used mostly by our Network Service Group and IT here at Herman Miller. It is also used as a view only tool as well for our support center groups and some of our remote sites. It allows us a very quick way to monitor or gather information on network segments before there is a problem or alerts when there is a problem. We have the ability to go back and look at history and learn what is normal in our infrastructure.
Pros
  • SolarWinds biggest strength is the is of use and configuration.
  • SolarWinds has a lot of flexibility on layout of screens and display
  • SolarWinds can be shared with many areas of the corporation for information or details of any network devices.
  • They are always updating and improving the product and adding new items to make monitoring more robust.
Cons
  • There are a lot of older items that are still in the system; it would be great if all looked the same.
  • The reporting had a lot of functionality for customizing until they moved to web based reports. Now all has to be SQL scripting.
  • There has been issues in the past with updates not going well. Solarwinds has been able to resolve all of them but it took a lot of time with support to get them resolved. But all have been fixed to the our satisfaction.
Likelihood to Recommend
SolarWinds is a very flexible product and it can be used by companies small and large. I like the fact that you can add the modules as you grow in what you would like to monitor and then they integrate with the current views and setup that you have already configured. This is a great tool for learning what normal network traffic looks like and compare to problems you may be having.
