Overall Satisfaction with Acumatica

We aren't using it probably to its full capacity with respect to project management. Part of why I'm here and part of why I want to go see some of these things, but it's really mainly used in our accounting department to do our payroll, our job costing, our financials, and those types of things.
  • There are a couple of different things. I think the thing about Acumatica is it's so robust. I think it's somewhat scalable. So I think that when I started with the company, some of the concerns were that there was so much that the thing did that we weren't using so many features and things that we weren't using. I do think it does whip pretty well. The financials are pretty easy to prepare, and journal entries and all the basic accounting stuff are fairly easy to do. I think there's a lot more it can do for us and hopefully I'll get something from the summit to take back and look at.
  • I think the biggest thing I think is payroll. I think there were issues when Acumatica first got into the construction industry with respect to certified payroll reporting, prevailing wage, and things like that. I think that they now have something, but I'm not sure because we're not using it. So I think that as they start to develop that more over the next couple of years, I think it'll take care of itself. But I think when we first got it, I think it was just not the ability to do construction payroll in the software. We had to use an external software and import it. Well, luckily today I talked to a DP, which is a seamless integrator with it, and I'm probably going to be switching to them.
  • Really the return on this was fairly quick. We had a software called American Contractor that phased out, so we had to switch to something and we did some demos and what have you back at that time before the decision was made to go with Acumatica. And so I'm not sure what other ones they looked at. I think they looked at IT software called Foundation, which is a construction software, and ended up not going with those because of the ability of Acumatica to be scalable and not so kind of stuck on certain processes that need to be followed in that particular software. And that's the information that was given to me. I wasn't there at the time.
Again, fairly easy to use. So there are not long processes in how to generate our invoices. Our AP is fairly easy and we're not using the commitments part of the software. So like I said, we're not using portions of the software we need to use that I think will actually make us better and more efficient. And there's communication features in there that I just was sitting through right now and I didn't even know it could do that. You could send emails out of it. I had no idea. So there's so much left on the table, excuse me, that we don't know yet. And I think that what's exciting about it is those things that I think that I can open the door and show the rest of the company, Hey, we're not using this. We need to be using this.
The good thing is on the job setup side with the tasks, the cost codes, and all those things. And also I sat through another thing and found out we're not quite doing it correctly, so I'm going to have to go back and we're going to have to re-look at our processes and how. But being able to drill down on those types of levels within a job costing I think is very helpful for us because if you do it at 30,000 feet, you're never going to know where you're bleeding. And so having those types of cost codes and those tasks that you can drill down to a granular level, I think is very important for the ability to understand how you're doing on a job and being able to do it mid-job and not postpartum where you're trying to look at it afterward. And so I think that's something that it does very well.
I've used PeopleSoft. I've used Mass 90, Sage 100. I've used probably every software that's out there, even as small as QuickBooks, but that's not enterprise software. So I've used quite a few of the big ones. I can't think of 'em off the top of my head, but those are a couple.
