Overall Satisfaction with Linode
We started with Linode when we ported our website from a hosting provider to a Virtual Private Server (VPS). We have added additional Linodes for various intranet and datastores. Linode makes it easy to use a VPS, with support for managing the operating system, network, storage, and other layers of the server.
- We really like the ease of use of the Linode cloud management environment.
- The Linode network team is very proactive, and communicates all network statuses in a timely and open manner.
- The DNS manager for Linode makes it easy to manage not only address records, but all of the text records needed for things like DMARC.
- The only complaint that we have with Linode is the pricing model. Pricing is done in tiers, and you cannot easily upgrade just RAM or storage by itself.
- Linode allows us to focus on the substance of our message, and not the underlying hardware.
- We are located in a hurricane and lightning prone are, so having our own data center is just not an option.
- Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
Linode is much easier to use than AWS. The model is simpler, and configuration and maintenance is simple. But what we really like is the fixed cost. With AWS we never know how much we are going to spend. With Linode, we know exactly how much the bill will be each month (the same as it was last month).
When you look at all of the things that we would need to provide a decent data center ourselves, the value quickly adds up. Just dealing with power, cooling, and redundent internet paths is enough to make my head spin. Thankfully Linode takes care of that, for one reasonable monthly price.
We have customers, and do business, around the world. We can not afford for our customer facing, or internal, resources to be down. Linode always communicates any possible disruption to our service. Even though we get notices during any upgrades or changes, seldom are our systems offline. I really get the feeling that the Linode staff cares about our business.
