Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have been using Oracle Database 12c very intensively. It is being used across the whole organization. It does address the availability and reliability of our database instances.

Pros and Cons

Availability.
Reliable.
Advanced Optimizer features. It has a better execution plan for a SQL statement, which results in faster runtimes and better performance.

Optimizer behaviour. In 12.1, when you upgraded from version 11, the behavior was not great. We had to apply a patch for the optimizer to work effectively. Lots of customers have had bad experiences because of this 12.1 update.
Patches. Oracle is not very specific about the patches they offer. You have to figure out which patch you need for which problem, and the information to find that is often difficult.

Suited for data warehouse and transnational databases. Not suited for databases with large queries as the optimizer behavior is bad in 12.1 and better in 12.2.
