Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our organization, we have thousands of microservices that were deployed on Kubernetes. The management of thousands of services was becoming very difficult so we decided to switch to Red Hat OpenShift.We use Red Hat OpenShift for the deployment and management of cloud infrastructure. With Red Hat OpenShift, we have an enterprise-grade platform, simplified management, and comprehensive support. In addition, we are able to run Kubernetes workloads in Red Hat OpenShift.

Pros and Cons

Red Hat OpenShift is well-suited for complex requirements.
Management of Red Hat OpenShift is easy when compared to Kubernetes.
Kubernetes workloads can be easily migrated over to Red Hat OpenShift.
Red Hat OpenShift has integrated developer tools and enhanced security.

The dashboard can be a bit more user-friendly.
Completed jobs continue to show up in the dashboard.
There should be an option to filter out the completed BuildConfigs.

Return on Investment

It has enabled less experienced team members to troubleshoot issues thus increasing productivity.
It comes with networking plugins, which has helped in quick deployment.
It comes with integrated development tools thus increasing developer productivity.

Application Development and Delivery

Red Hat OpenShift builds on top of Kubernetes and provides easier management of the Kubernetes platform. It provides enhanced capabilities not present in Kubernetes, thus making it easier for IT teams to quickly deploy the cloud platforms. Red Hat OpenShift has enabled team members of various skills productive and enabled enhanced IT productivity. Red Hat OpenShift comes with integrated developer plugins which has increased developer productivity. In a nutshell, it is a must for agile enterprises.

Performance

Red Hat OpenShift provides a wrapper around Kubernetes. The orchestration platform used by Red Hat OpenShift is Kubernetes. However, there are some features which make it good performant. The image pull policy can be set so that only the images can be pre-pulled. This saves a lot of time especially when the network is slow. CPU manager allows managing the workloads to specific CPU(s).

Alternatives Considered

Kubernetes and Wind River Cloud Platform

Red Hat OpenShift makes the Kubernetes operations simpler and easier to provide. Kubernetes operations can be complicated especially for beginner(s). Red Hat OpenShift provides a web and CLI interface so that teams with different skill sets can be productive. Red Hat OpenShift provides various features like the CPU Manager which provides better control on the resource allocation and usage. This control is lacking in other solutions.

Red Hat OpenShift is well suited if organizations are looking for commercial enterprise-grade software without the overhead of managing open source. Red Hat OpenShift provides the common underlying platform (RHEL), thus reducing the overhead of managing different platforms. Red Hat OpenShift is particularly suited for beginners as it offers both web and CLI to perform various operations. It is not suited for organizations that are on a tight budget as deploying Red Hat OpenShift can be expensive.
