Overall Satisfaction with Schoology

The Diocese of San Bernardino uses Schoology in their parishes to address time constraints in faith formation. Our "Schoology Parishes" use the online platform to do flip classroom, differentiated learning, and seamless learning. We also use Schoology in our Ministry Formation Institute (aka MFI) (university-style faith formation) and as professional development for our Directors of Religious Education. Recently, six of our schools have agreed to pilot the Enterprise version of Schoology. For the 2017-2018 school year, these six schools will transition their curriculum to a hybrid format. Schoology allows the Diocese of San Bernardino to address the learner at multiple levels.--Inside the Schoology platform an individual can have multiple roles: they can be an instructor of a course, a student of another course, and parent of a student. Schoology allows our teachers and students inside our vast diocese to connect via groups. We can create Professional Learning Networks (PLN's) as well as vicariate/ cluster groups for our students.
  • Intuitive - easily learned.
  • Aesthetically appealing - the layout of information is easy on the eyes. There isn't a "clutter" of information on the screen.
  • Schoology needs peer assessment.
  • Schoology needs a "plan book" (Curriculum mapping).
  • Schoology needs a way to connect their plan book to assignments.
  • Schoology needs a way to connect their (future) plan book to assignments.
  • So far everything has been positive because we have been using the free version. We will see in the upcoming months.
Desire2Learn (D2L) is a great product with great features but it did not meet our needs. We had planned on using our LMS in our parishes, which meant that we would constantly train volunteers on how to use it. D2L has a huge learning curve and at the time did not have a free version for our parishes to test drive. Schoology's platform was modeled after Facebook which made training and adoption easy.
Schoology is suited for institutions that want to move to an online learning environment; whether it is hybrid or completely online. It is not well suited for institutions that want to house their student information on their own servers. Schoology frees up certain backend IT issues for your IT team. But you have to be willing to allow your information to be stored on Schoology's servers.
