Overall Satisfaction with Oracle SQL Developer

SQL Developer is used by some of the programmers and database administrators. We use it for data fixes in Oracle databases along with processes in PL/SQL to update a lot of data. It works well to do complex or simple data updates and is easy to pick up for new programmers.
  • Easy to use UI.
  • Fairly quick software with right Java versions, etc.
  • Formatting feature is good.
  • Explain plan feature is great.
  • Canceling queries (at least in older versions) didn't actually cancel queries; it still had to do the entire query then rollback.
  • Out of sync versions of java make SQL Developer run terribly, I've had this happen on a virtual machine and I no longer use it there.
  • Setting defaults for login/etc. With files isn't so simple even for newer versions.
  • Provides a positive impact for allowing new hires to pick up the software quickly to make updates/fixes
  • The ease of use saves time
  • Simple UI that doesn't bombard you with too many features (you can find them if you look for it though) makes it save time for just doing the job
Toad is really useful for all the many features it offers. When I was a new hire it was daunting to use and I didn't use half the features since it was so complex. Our data scientist team uses it and that is one of the software they are in all day. When I ended up changing machines I went to SQL Developer since it was simple. I do not have to spend all day in SQL Developer, it works for when I need to do various data fixes throughout the day.
SQL Developer is well suited for day to day work with data updates. This could be for updating large amounts of data or small fixes. It is also good for new hires or new programmers who may not be used to SQL since it's fairly easy to pick up. For ETL processing or data scientist work I think SQL Developer is less appropriate as it doesn't provide as many features as those users need or like.
