Overall Satisfaction with StarWind Virtual SAN

StarWind vSAN is an essential part of our business at this point. It is the back end storage system for our virtualization and it would be a massive set back to return to our old independent server setup. In a given day it is totally out of the way but when we need to make a change it is easy to work with and reconfigure.
  • Mirrors Storage very well. Haven't been able to corrupt anything with unexpected power offs.
  • Improves Performance. Since the storage is replicated to the other node in real time, iSCSI MPIO allows clients to perform parallel read/writes improving performance.
  • Great Storage Solution for Hyper-Converged virtualization. This is the product's best side. When you only have two servers, load up StarWind vSAN on them, mirror your storage, cluster them, and you're golden.
  • I believe that the list price of StarWind vSAN is a bit high.
  • I would love to see this system managed by WebUI.
  • StarWind vSAN allows my business to operate much more efficiently because it eliminated any single point of failure in our virtualization environment.
We also tested Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct (S2D). StarWind vSAN was hands down, the easiest to configure. It wasn't the cheapest but it is worth the money. FreeNAS has a huge learning curve to it and requires specific hardware to get support for it. Proxmox is a similar story but no support. VMware vSAN wasn't bad but was more expensive and dealing with VMWare is always a pain. Using StarWind vSAN allows us to use any hardware and disk configuration. That covers most the cost of the license.
As I said, StarWind vSAN is amazing for Hyper-Converged virtualization environments. I can see StarWind vSAN being good in any environment that requires storage to be highly available. It allows for unlimited nodes (license dependent) and is easy to configure at any size. The more nodes, the better the disk performance.
