Overall Satisfaction with VMware ESXi
VMware ESXi is the best there is. As a type-1 hypervisor, it supports from the bare metal up. From there, you can install vCenter or standalone hosts that can then create anything from a Linux to an .ova to a Windows environment. I believe VMware ESXi does this better than anyone else in the game that I have used.
- Deploys virtual server very well
- Deploys .ova very well
- Great details, notes, and alerts
- Very scalable
- It can be cost prohibitive for some small to medium-sized businesses
- With its integration with EMC VxRail, getting the right support for the issue can sometimes prove difficult
- Based in VmKernal cli, so if you ever need to ssh, it can get hair pretty quick if you're not in there regularly
- VMware ESXi runs almost all of our production environment. We trust it that much.
- Once you buy, you're sort of committed long term. Its a large but worthy investment
- Dell EMC now owns the majority of VMware, which makes us a Dell shop, so we have more bargaining power
- Hyper-V and Nutanix AOS
If you're strapped for cash or tied to Microsoft completely, then Hyper-V might be for you. I have used both and having VMware ESXi at the host and kerel level is much more fluid and makes sense. I would estimate 80% of enterprises run VMware ESXi vs any other Level-1 or 2 hypervisor.
