A Cloud Guru (Linux Academy)

I think it's really well suited for training up a team from beginner level to competence with new technologies. It looks to align well to certifications which can provide confidence in the skill level of the team.I'm not sure how it will play out long-term once we have people who come in with a high skill level in an area as it can be difficult to figure out how to plug gaps in general knowledge with the platform. It doesn't work as well for those learners who prefer to just read the man pages and get hands on with a home lab (apart from the cloud playgrounds, but the platform is expensive if that's all a learner will use).

Maestro

Maestro is great for managing my membership and is terrific with reservations. At this time I am not sure if there is any scenario where it is less appropriate. I guess it doesn't work well as an interface for a golf shop, for tee times, etc. And, any golf product we get doesn't speak well with Maestro, so maybe golf. But, they may have a solution for that too.

Pros

A Cloud Guru (Linux Academy)

  • The team at A Cloud Guru is excellent at responding to user feedback that is submitted through their website.
  • The content created is well organized and aligns to certification paths.
  • The content is accessible on mobile and web platforms, which is great for learning on the go.

Maestro

  • Creating a completely customized rubric to grade tickets on the things you want to help your team grow in
  • Allowing managers to track how their agents are doing as well as providing concrete examples of work product for 1:1 meetings
  • Giving management peace of mind that agents are responding appropriately to clients

Cons

A Cloud Guru (Linux Academy)

  • The merger with A Cloud Guru has confused things a bit. They're slowly replacing the Linux academy branded training with ACG training (which is fine) but if we found ourselves losing access to training videos while we were in the midst of watching them
  • A more robust community would be nice. There's the Slack channel, but I wish there was more robust community features
  • It would be nice to be able to download videos locally on desktops and laptops. This helps greatly with rewinding the video to reiterate key learning points

Maestro

  • No ability to view contact information from a home screen (must click into profile to see phone number)
  • Feels a bit archaic
  • Would be nice to see "flags" or ways to mark students for calling
  • Wish that the 'attempted call' option turned a student yellow instead of keeping them red

Maestro is what we are comfortable with and probably what we'll stay with, but it can be slow at times and lacks certain functionalities

The site can have some issues. It can be difficult to return to the training module you were viewing after some time away from the site and you have to relogin. We've also had issues where the session will time out at random points, which makes it frustrating to move on to the next videos in the module when you have to re-login and try and find which one you left off on.

I've never had to communicate with Linux Academy's customer support aside from some minor billing issues, which were easily ironed out in a very quick manner.

I love Maestro support! They are always available or get back to you quickly. The employees that work at Maestro must get treated well because they are always positive and patient on the phone with me. And, even though I am not great with technology they always help me find a solution.

Alternatives Considered

A Cloud Guru (Linux Academy)

A Cloud Guru (Linux Academy) was the only platform we evaluated for the vast majority of our cloud training, however we have found other providers are better in certain areas and use them to supplement A Cloud Guru (Linux Academy). For example, TutorialsDojo and WhizLabs both have better quiz systems in my opinion. Both of them present more difficult questions that better reflect the AWS ones as well as giving better feedback.

Maestro

We selected Maestro over Qualitista and some hacked together Google Sheets scripts that performed similar functions. At the time Qualitista was in its early alpha stage and wasn't something that would have worked for our team. The Google Sheets script worked well for a small team, but didn't allow us to do what we wanted with peer feedback. The team at Maestro did a great job onboarding us and adding features for our peer feedback use case.

Return on Investment

A Cloud Guru (Linux Academy)

  • Engagement scores around investment in L&D have increased.
  • There's excitement around upcoming changes to our technology instead of fear we have seen in the past.
  • We feel confident we will be able to deliver these new technologies - although we are at the start of our journey.

Maestro

  • At one point our step pricing was not working properly so we did lose some room revenue. Maestro helped us get this resolved.
  • Maestro saves time, which saves money, by having all of our member billing, reservations and more in one location.
  • No other impacts that I can think of.
