AB Tasty

The main question that we asked ourselves when we had to choose a tool for A/B testing was "is this tool adapted to our website architecture and will it allow us to launch the A/B tests we want to launch ?" AB Tasty is very well suited to launch tests using a redirect or even to make some minor modifications on some pages without dynamics

Convert Experiences

It is specifically suited for advanced A/B testing, and anytime you need to do testing on dynamic and AJAX sites. I can't think of any scenario where I would recommend a competitor over this product. We've used several over the years and we've found that Convert Experiences is far superior. Perhaps if you are new to A/B testing (it can get quite expensive), or if you have fundamental usability problems on your site so you're not ready for A/B testing. But if you are ready for A/B testing and you have it well-budgeted out, Convert Experiences is, in my opinion, the far superior solution.

Pros

  • Tests are very easy to set up with the platform, or using the widget.
  • AB Tasty's team are very open to propositions of evolutions for the tool.
  • Reading and analyzing the results of the tests is quite simple and intuitive.
  • The results are also easy to share with the people in the company who might find them useful.

  • Support is top-notch. It is easy to get hold of the founder/SEO Dennis and if you run into any significant trouble, it's easy to get hold of the senior developers.
  • Advanced editing. Unlike a lot of their competitors, Convert allows you to edit the variation code directly. This means that you can basically test any website (including AJAX and highly dynamic sites). This is not the case with some other competitors.
  • Easy breakdown and visualization of daily conversion patterns. Surprisingly, this is not available with a lot of A/B testing platforms. We want to see the conversion rate daily so that we can see if there are any validity threats in the test. Most platforms only provide an aggregate of data up to that day.
  • "Blink" handling. Convert takes great pains to reduce or eliminate the "blink" that comes with any javascript rewrite based A/B testing software. AFAIK they are the only ones who do this. Any blinking might cause instrumentation bias in the tests that we certainly don't want.

Cons

  • Maybe some editor functionalities could be directly accessible from the homepage, like the amount of traffic you give to a test.
  • The functionality that allows you to point the whole traffic through a variation while keeping the measure of results is not that easy to set up compared to the editor tool. It could be even more intuitive by copying the set up of the initial test.
  • Reports loading can sometimes be quite long when we have a lot of traffic (that point has been improved but is not yet perfect).

  • The only con is the inability to have page views as a goal, but that is something they are working on.

AB Tasty's tool as well as the support team completely met my goals on A/B Testing. Editing a test is really easy and AB Tasty made the marketing team free to launch nearly any test. Reporting is also easy to set up and give us the information needed to keep improving transformation on landing pages and forms

Alternatives Considered

Crazy Egg was mainly only used for heat mapping, which it does really well. I haven't used Google Optimize too much yet but it has most of the same functionality as A/B Tasty. Google Analytics is more used for reporting and a deeper look into data. AB Tasty by far has the best customer service and helpful staff to get your tests and reporting tuned up.

While Optimizely is an amazing A/B testing tool, Convert has almost the exact same offerings but at a much lower cost. The customer and technical support are excellent as well, and Dennis's insights and strategy calls are very helpful.
