Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

I wouldn't recommend Data Integrator over SSIS, but it may be a better tool than other ETL offerings. Having a background in the Microsoft Stack, I am hesitant to recommend any other products especially in a Microsoft-centric company. If this was the only option to use, I think it does a good job at integrating systems after taking time to learn the approach. "Maps" in Data Integrator is definitely different than "process flow" philosophy in SSIS.

Dell Boomi

Boomi is an integration platform. It will address integration requirements between applications, cloud or on-premise. Also, will allow you to integrate with vendors and customers via EDI or FTP for data transfers. Examples: - NetSuite/Oracle eBusiness Suite/SAP with vendors for manufacturing management and financial transactions- cloud to cloud integration(NetSuite to Namely/OpenAir/Concur, SalesForce to ERP)- on-premise to cloud: custom legacy apps that almost every company has can be integrated to cloud apps, making the transition to 100% cloud apps easier

Pros

  • Map multiple source and destination tables - what would be done in many steps in SSIS can be done in one or two "maps" in Data Integrator.
  • Platform independent, cloud based, no client software.
  • Conversion of data types, write flat files - this helps us with integrating systems.
  • Fairly straightforward to use if the user has ETL experience.

  • Boomi allows us to quickly integrate existing or new systems with a point and click user interface. We have integrated our ERP/CRM system (Netsuite) with our eCommerce sites built in Magento Commerce and WebSphere Commerce, along with custom websites written in ColdFusion. We switched from WebSphere to Magento 1-2 years ago, and it was a seemless transition.
  • Boomi is constantly upgraded and improved. In the time I have used it, I have been impressed by the number of changes and improvements made.
  • Boomi handles large amounts of data quickly and provides exceptional tools for testing and debugging issues.
  • Boomi provides a way to script using Groovy and JavaScript that allows the user to extend the system to fit business needs.

Cons

  • Sometimes the screen does not load- since it is a web based software, this can be seen as a reliability issue.
  • "Maps" can become somewhat complex, and between multiple developers this can be painful when sharing or explaining others' work.
  • The concept of macros adds flexibility in how to solve problems, but is a separate language and can take time to learn and master.

  • For some transformation areas, we still have to use scripting, like for dynamically converting xml to csv or vice versa without defining a specific profile. These ideas are addressed in the communities.

Boomi is a great product and crucial to our infrastructure. We have not seen another system that would provide us with the same features and robustness, so there is no reason to not renew.

They are quick to respond. Sometimes I figure out workarounds before they respond, but I am impatient and try other options. They acknowledge issues and have a Suggestions portal, the knowledge base is helpful too.

Alternatives Considered

Data Integrator was initially a part of a package deal for us with our new Student Information System. It was chosen prior to my arrival at the institution. Since I discovered we have SQL Server licenses, we have decided to use SSIS instead since I have a background in the MSBI stack and SSIS appears to be more straightforward (process flow philosophy vs "map" philosophy.)

Dell Boomi is a low code cloud-based tool and it has a lot more inbuilt features compared with these tools.

Return on Investment

  • This tool was chosen prior to my arrival and was used to build three integrations. We have decided to switch to SSIS since we have licenses for it and it is a more common tool for ETL integrations.
  • It has been difficult to network with individuals that have experience with this tool.
  • Having been a part of a software package purchased, we have chosen to use a different tool for future integrations and plan to rewrite existing integrations.

  • Boomi has very positive impact compared to other competitive tools. My clients are very happy that they can build their systems quickly and move data. Process development time is minimal and deployment is easy.
  • In my current project, within 6 months we were able to build processes and go live. Which was well appreciated and happy with their investment.
  • I do not find any negative impact to the business.
