Likelihood to Recommend

Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

I wouldn't recommend Data Integrator over SSIS, but it may be a better tool than other ETL offerings. Having a background in the Microsoft Stack, I am hesitant to recommend any other products especially in a Microsoft-centric company. If this was the only option to use, I think it does a good job at integrating systems after taking time to learn the approach. "Maps" in Data Integrator is definitely different than "process flow" philosophy in SSIS.

Dell Boomi

Areas where Boomi is well suited:
1) Salesforce integration
2) Netsuite integration
3) Successfactors integration
4) When the technical team does not know or is not keen on learning a scripting language in deep

Areas where Boomi is not well suited:
1) Heavy data load scenarios. Eventhough Boomi have run times which provides supports for heavy data load, there are other tools which handles these scenarios well.

Pros

  • Map multiple source and destination tables - what would be done in many steps in SSIS can be done in one or two "maps" in Data Integrator.
  • Platform independent, cloud based, no client software.
  • Conversion of data types, write flat files - this helps us with integrating systems.
  • Fairly straightforward to use if the user has ETL experience.

  • Document and File translation and modification - every day systems need to communicate, however rarely do they speak the same language or format. Boomi allows us to modify data, translate data, format data into the proper needs for various systems.
  • Provides an avenue that both the expert user and novice user can succeed with.
  • Reduces the complexity of tasks
  • Provides more lower "Time to Production" in comparison with stand alone software development.

Cons

  • Sometimes the screen does not load- since it is a web based software, this can be seen as a reliability issue.
  • "Maps" can become somewhat complex, and between multiple developers this can be painful when sharing or explaining others' work.
  • The concept of macros adds flexibility in how to solve problems, but is a separate language and can take time to learn and master.

  • Big maps, profiles take time to load. But you need to wait for them load completely before any change. Otherwise, some incorrect thing (for example some links will be disconnected) will happen and it takes you much time to investigate.
  • The way Boomi processes documents may be different from the programming languages you are using. So you have to change your mindset logically when working with Boomi.
  • Logging and debugging is a hard process when you execute processes on Atom. Hopefully, Boomi can visualize an execution just like the way it does when running on test mode.
  • Number of features (shapes) are limited, you need to use them flexibly to meet your needs. Otherwise, you need to write some source code with custom scripts.

It's pretty expensive, and custom coding an integration system is almost the same price over a 3-5 year term.

Very versatile. When looking to sync your data and need something that will work both out of the box or with customization, Boomi should be on your short list.

They are quick to respond. Sometimes I figure out workarounds before they respond, but I am impatient and try other options. They acknowledge issues and have a Suggestions portal, the knowledge base is helpful too.

Alternatives Considered

Data Integrator was initially a part of a package deal for us with our new Student Information System. It was chosen prior to my arrival at the institution. Since I discovered we have SQL Server licenses, we have decided to use SSIS instead since I have a background in the MSBI stack and SSIS appears to be more straightforward (process flow philosophy vs "map" philosophy.)

We have evaluated Mulesoft as well before going with Dell Boomi. The only difference is the Complete Cloud architecture provided by Boomi and also the ease of using the software, where you don't need to install anything on a developer machine or testing machine or any quality system. Everything is based on web login and that provides very fast development of the flows.

Return on Investment

  • This tool was chosen prior to my arrival and was used to build three integrations. We have decided to switch to SSIS since we have licenses for it and it is a more common tool for ETL integrations.
  • It has been difficult to network with individuals that have experience with this tool.
  • Having been a part of a software package purchased, we have chosen to use a different tool for future integrations and plan to rewrite existing integrations.

  • Cost effective
  • Less maintenance
  • No head-ache of maintaining infrastructure
