Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

I wouldn't recommend Data Integrator over SSIS, but it may be a better tool than other ETL offerings. Having a background in the Microsoft Stack, I am hesitant to recommend any other products especially in a Microsoft-centric company. If this was the only option to use, I think it does a good job at integrating systems after taking time to learn the approach. "Maps" in Data Integrator is definitely different than "process flow" philosophy in SSIS.

Dell Boomi

Dell Boomi is a great choice if you are integrating real-time processes with multiple other systems. If you have a web service call that requires transforming the data I think Boomi is the best choice. Where I wouldn't recommend using it is for batch processing. It can do the trick if needed but when a batch process goes down it can be extremely hard to figure out where the problem is. The problem is usually in the data but finding that data can be very tricky when you are processing thousands of transactions at a time.

Pros

  • Map multiple source and destination tables - what would be done in many steps in SSIS can be done in one or two "maps" in Data Integrator.
  • Platform independent, cloud based, no client software.
  • Conversion of data types, write flat files - this helps us with integrating systems.
  • Fairly straightforward to use if the user has ETL experience.

  • Boomi is a wonderful cloud integration tool. It is easy to code or develop. And this is the easiest tool I have ever used for installation and deployment.
  • Boomi also is a near real time data processing tool. Its atomsphere makes it easy for light weighted data processing.
  • Boomi has lots of built in functions therefore eliminates the need for coding 90%.
  • Boomi licensing is very cost effective. You do not have to buy the whole features of Boomi. Based your business need you can select features. This helps reduce cost and be more productive of the tool.

Cons

  • Sometimes the screen does not load- since it is a web based software, this can be seen as a reliability issue.
  • "Maps" can become somewhat complex, and between multiple developers this can be painful when sharing or explaining others' work.
  • The concept of macros adds flexibility in how to solve problems, but is a separate language and can take time to learn and master.

  • Boomi does have room for improvement. Mainly in the areas of using connectors. I do encounter [issues] with a few connectors like SFTP, missing certain wild card filters while processing different types of files.
  • There are a few functionalities also missing like processing large amounts of data. I very often see data getting lost when large amounts of data processed or it gets suspended without any specific failures.
  • Look and feel could be improved in terms of moving or selecting a shape.
  • Process report logs could provide more filter options.

Boomi is a great product and crucial to our infrastructure. We have not seen another system that would provide us with the same features and robustness, so there is no reason to not renew.

They are quick to respond. Sometimes I figure out workarounds before they respond, but I am impatient and try other options. They acknowledge issues and have a Suggestions portal, the knowledge base is helpful too.

Alternatives Considered

Data Integrator was initially a part of a package deal for us with our new Student Information System. It was chosen prior to my arrival at the institution. Since I discovered we have SQL Server licenses, we have decided to use SSIS instead since I have a background in the MSBI stack and SSIS appears to be more straightforward (process flow philosophy vs "map" philosophy.)

I have used other integration tools as well (with 10 years of integration experience). Eventually, I liked Boomi for its simplicity and easy graphical representation, development, installation, versioning and deployment. Testing Boomi processes is another plus because it is easy to debug. In other tools, I used build custom components for most business needs but Boomi has connectors for almost every business need.

Return on Investment

  • This tool was chosen prior to my arrival and was used to build three integrations. We have decided to switch to SSIS since we have licenses for it and it is a more common tool for ETL integrations.
  • It has been difficult to network with individuals that have experience with this tool.
  • Having been a part of a software package purchased, we have chosen to use a different tool for future integrations and plan to rewrite existing integrations.

  • Increased data visibility between our Sales and Accounting teams
  • Major increase in data quality due to the reduction of manual data entry
  • Increase in efficiency due to the reduction of manual data entry
