The service provision is good the accounts customer service is poor so I would struggle to give BC a better than average review, if only they could offer customers a better accounts service then the value would be much higher.

Oracle Commerce Cloud

Oracle Commerce Cloud seems to have a lot of ties to other systems (of course, other Oracle systems, but also others) which can ultimately provide a lot of additional benefits by having multiple systems talk to each other. For example, marketing automation can interact with OCC and an ERP system.The user friendliness is certainly the most beneficial - we've previously had to rely on an overwhelmed IT and programming staff, whereas now marketing can deal with far more backend items. A/B testing items on a live page and automatically implementing the "winning" variable is hugely beneficial - especially since marketing can endlessly try new things easily.However, the initial implementation and build out still seems difficult and fraught with the possibility of difficult to fix errors. Documentation appears to be sparse, or at least spread across a wide variety of areas. A step-by-step onboarding process would help.

Pros

  • Probably one of the easiest e-commerce platforms to work in, it does take setup, but compared to a lot of other e-commerce solutions, this is probably the best one that I have seen that can be designed and implemented custom.
  • Their template system works very well and allows you to create and re-use templates across Adobe Business Catalyst.
  • Their pre-built modules are great, giving people a great way to use common web elements without having to use a plug-in or find some solution, it is simply built in and generally works exactly as you would expect.
  • Adobe Business Catalyst is more of an all-around solution, providing elements that most smaller companies would have a hard time figuring out, since it includes the ability to build websites, send and track e-mails, analytics. It really is a powerful tool that would typically require a fair amount of coding knowledge and expertise but with the system already built, it can be easily modified and edited by those with limited or no coding knowledge at all.

  • OCC is mobile friendly and you can create different views easily
  • IT does not need to be involved in adding and modifying products - the backend user interface is easy for marketing to work within
  • A/B testing is extremely easy, requires absolutely no programming, and allows marketing to continuously optimize the website - live - and automatically implement the best working results

Cons

  • They do not have the ability to create and build custom plug-ins for use on websites.
  • They do not support every payment gateway, they support the major ones, and most others, but if you have some very unusual payment gateway, it might not be supported.
  • The custom web apps were absolutely one of my favorite parts of this system, and it is really a shame that they do not allow them to be used on all tiers of the website, you have to get the web commerce tier to edit and use them.

  • Initial implementation for us has been particularly expensive, and requires the use of multiple partners. Onboarding and initial build out can be difficult, with some potential far-reaching errors.
  • We've discovered from others in our use case, that if an error is made in initial product definition and hierarchy setup, they live in the instance permanently.
  • Specifically, within search, it will only search 'products,' so things like warranties, articles, or other content wouldn't show up unless literally everything is an independent product.

The simplicity of this platform is the main reason. BC is incredibly easy for first time users and very streamlined for experienced users. I also look at the integration with other Adobe products in my company. Being able to stay completely in one piece of software (Muse or Dreamweaver) for a full design and publish make much better use of my time.

Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

I have used Adobe support for many of their products. I find that they are quick to respond and present a wide variety of support platforms from forums to online chat. Depending on the nature of the issue I am usually able to get resolution within 24 to 48 hours. With more complex issues I have never had a problem with Adobe dropping the ball.

Alternatives Considered

The largest competitor in my portfolio is GoDaddy. I tend to use them for larger products or for all inclusive domain registration and web presence. I prefer using BC for most everything due to its simplistic nature. It is a very streamlined product and is easy to add users from my clients as editors and managers. This makes content update and creation so much easier. It also eases the minds of content managers within my clients companies as they will have some control over what goes on the web site. GoDaddy is my go to product for customized web designs, larger projects, and anything that requires server side software not supported by BC. It tends to be more involved and time consuming and less productive for me as a small business. So while I prefer to work with BC there are just some limitations that send me over to another hosting platform.

We weighed a few different options, including adjusting our own custom solution, but ultimately chose OCC due to Oracle's backing and integration with other Oracle items, which we also acquired (ERP, project management, etc.). Really, it's about a stable ecosystem with a massive amount of resources behind it - we're confident that any issues we run into can either be easily fixed, or it's a large enough ecosystem with users that there's an acceptable workaround that someone already has found. AI integration out-of-the-box is pretty great, too.

Return on Investment

  • The biggest returns I have seen come from using BC as an individual product in my offerings. I see that it is also growing as a product and Adobe is growing it as a lead generation platform.
  • The second biggest positive impact to my business comes from the time saved in development. My target demographic is small to medium sized businesses and BC is perfect for marketing to this demographic.
  • My biggest complaint is that there is a lack of server side customization. When clients ask me if a certain type of website or application can be done I automatically know that I cannot put that site on the BC platform.

  • We anticipate mobile traffic bounce rate to drop significantly and conversion rates to increase. We're still to early on in our implementation to confirm these findings.
