Amazon Web Services

It is a well-balanced service for commercial-scale applications or at homes start-ups. You can experiment with different environments to find a configured that suits your needs, without the fear of long-term consequences. This allows for high performing, highly available architecture that is also cost-effective. You can configure your environment down to the minutia, or launch a wizard to handle it for you, allowing for mass-scale deployments.

There are countless solutions and needs in the marketplace. Some solutions are straight forward, other highly complicated and innovative. From my perspective, our platform and application is highly complex and innovative, with many "one-off" features.

Pros

Amazon Web Services

  • The ability to scale instances to optimized cost and performance.
  • Monitoring hardware issues and automatically migrating instances to new hardware when necessary.
  • Cloudwatch alerting allows monitoring of systems 24/7.

Oracle API Platform Cloud

  • Oracles Cloud is endlessly variable, and endlessly expandable.
  • These are qualities that we needed in our platform. Oracle's Name in business was also an important aspect of our decision.
  • The most important "like" is the support. Oracle Backs up its cloud with a technical expertise that I believe is second to none.

Cons

Amazon Web Services

  • Because we have a large amount of data, constantly uploading and downloading, our monthly fee isn't a set amount, but instead fluctuates up and down each month.

  • Planned maintenance. Oracle has certain days it schedules maintenance. We have been speaking with Oracle executives about the inability to schedule maintenance on days that are custom to the client.

AWS is still the platform of choice for our customers.

Usability

Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services 7.3
Based on 5 answers
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an expert first platform that allows significant customization, but sacrifices ease of use. As a platform, it is definitely an experts-first platform with a significant learning curve and some technical overhead. Since it is the market leader, there are also significant free resources to help get up to speed.

Performance

Amazon Web Services

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Support

Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services 9.3
Based on 7 answers
Amazon Web Services (AWS) support is hit and miss at the free tier, and OK at the paid tier. Since AWS is running so many different platforms, it is sometimes difficult to get an expert answer for a specific issue when it arises. When issues arise, it can often be hit or miss.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Web Services

We looked at Microsoft 365 Business because it's so popular. It's ease of use seemed attractive but it didn't have the agility or scalability we found in AWS. IBM Analytics Engine was far more complex than we needed and very expensive. AWS is an operations tool for us so the reporting we get for the quality of service we wanted, is perfect as is.

Return on Investment

Amazon Web Services

  • I have seen people spend a lot of money just playing with AWS because they had no idea what they were doing. Pay attention, and know what you are getting into before you do anything.
  • My previous company was in the process of moving entirely to AWS, and I know it had to be cost effective because they had datacenters at over 20 locations.

  • For ROI, my advice would be to stay the course. It will take longer than you think and cost more than you expect.
