Apache Web Server

If you are only serving up simple websites such as those on WordPress or plain html, then it might be well suited for that. Higher traffic websites or heavy load websites might be better suited for Nginx server as it spreads out the traffic among several threads.

WebSphere DataPower

On the edge this appliance is one of the best, if it's not the best. When it comes to complex any-to-any transformations and/or orchestrations there are much better tools for the job.

Pros

  • Great handling of virtual hosts.
  • Works extremely well with Perl/CGI and the Mod-Perl module for fast and reliable execution of server side scripts.
  • Handles serving up web pages well, a true no muss, no fuss situation.

  • The most obvious thing that DataPower does exceptionally well is security. All the built-in supported security capabilities allow us to isolate most security tasks to DataPower and as a result "protect" down steam services/systems to have to deal with security.
  • DataPower is very good at protocol conversion and as it is usually used on the edge allows you to narrow down the protocols used between the companies public and private networks.
  • The appliance concept makes maintenance, recovery and, management so much simpler.

Cons

  • I think it could use a web UI to configure it
  • It could allow PHP to override configuration without having to modify it
  • I've never seen statistics for it so I assume there is not much built in

  • The fact that once an appliance reaches end-of-life it becomes a doorstop. A company made a big investment and knowing that in 5 to 9 years you will be left with nothing makes the deal not so appealing.

Alternatives Considered

Apache is often used in conjunction with Nginx, with Nginx in front of Apache to serve static assets like CSS and JS. Both are easy to configure. IIS is pretty cumbersome and is not as flexible as Apache.

Return on Investment

  • Best to go for if using war files/folder
  • Portability web server
  • Easy navigation

  • Positive is the time to market for the implementation and management of complex edge integrations.
  • Finding skilled DataPower developers has proven a bit of a challenge. Integration specialists are a special breed and DataPower specific developers even more so.
