Arista 7000 series

Core and data center applications are the strengths of Arista products. The distribution layer is also a good fit. For the access layer, it would be more of a niche product.

Juniper Ethernet Switches

They work great as core switches, data center switches, top of rack switches. They can even serve as routers, their routing capability is great, except for where you need lots of routing processing power. I would not use many of them for branch office switches though, due to noise and slowness of bootup

Pros

Arista 7000 series

  • The 7304's along side our core network design has provided 100% uptime during the 5 years of deployment.
  • The multi-chassis LAG has provided near 100% connectivity to the distribution and access switches.
  • Very low maintenance attention is needed.

Juniper Ethernet Switches

  • Configuration is light years beyond everyone else. The structure of the config file and the commit/confirm/rollback features are critical.
  • Juniper Support is excellent and affordable.
  • The variety of models is enough to cater to particular needs, but there is not a dizzying array of options like other vendors.
  • JunOS operating system is the same across all platforms, greatly simplifying administration.

Cons

Arista 7000 series

  • The 7304's lack a graceful non-intrusive upgrade method even though they are dual supervisor.
  • I would like to see more integration with Aruba's ClearPass and Airwave products.

Juniper Ethernet Switches

  • Speed - some models are quite slow to boot up and to respond when working on the console.
  • Fan loudness - some models, like EX2300, are extremely loud for no reason. The moment the intake temperature is a bit high, they rev up the fan to full speed, even though the temperature inside the switch is OK. This creates problems with using the switches in small offices with limited air conditioning.
  • Syntax - Many commands are quite convoluted and not intuitive. Logging in particular is a challenge.

When support was required, we were always able to obtain an engineer on the phone. Sometimes the engineer's quality left a lot of room for improvement, but eventually all issues have been resolved.

Alternatives Considered

Arista 7000 series

I have used the Catalyst 6500 series in the past. From my point of view, the Arista surpasses the Catalyst on just about every front. Originally we were planning on implementing the Nexus 7000/7700 series switches for our core. Though a little more feature rich, it did not provide features we needed that the Arista did. The Nexus also was a confusing and complex platform to work with. Also, the Nexus was a significantly more expensive solution. Although very happy with the Arista switches we may evaluate the Aruba HPE 8400 chassis-based switches along with Arista switches in the future.

Juniper Ethernet Switches

  • Cisco: expensive, cluttered list of models, expensive (and poor) support, OS is different across platforms, difficult to manage, no commit/confirm/rollback
  • Ubiquiti: inexpensive, basically no proper support (community support only)
  • Brocade: OS is Cisco-wannabe (with all of the bad), company has been broken up so support is questionable.
Juniper: obvious choice

Return on Investment

Arista 7000 series

  • The Arista 7000 series met or exceed our data center switching and routing needs.
  • It provided a more cost effective alternative to other products we were considering.
  • Implementation was quick and easy due to the simple standards-based configuration.

Juniper Ethernet Switches

  • From a user's point of view, the ease of configuration and management has been incredible. Much less time is spent maintaining Juniper than previous solutions.
  • From a reseller's point of a view, Juniper is excellent. They treat small partners like us very well even if our volume is not huge. Juniper switches are part of our standard solution that has been great for our customers.
