Oracle ATG

I would say that Oracle ATG Web Commerce is most likely better suited for companies that have a wide selection of products online as well as a customer base that is robust enough to justify this software. We were managing several stores and so we needed this software to create an atmosphere of quick and efficient searching from customers as well as some sort of guidance for products that they would like based on their searches

Sitecore Web Content Management is very well suited for a web team to use to manage an organization's own website because there are so many features and capabilities that a developer rarely has to get involved. You have a lot of flexibility to do many things you need, and there is only a small learning curve. However, I have worked in the past for clients that have very little technical experience, and this might be a little bit too complicated for someone like that to pick up.

Pros

  • Easily customizable dashboards that are versatile and fit the needs of different departments within a company.
  • Search tool is unparalleled and provides multiple parameters for narrowing down your query in a jiffy.
  • Customer service is always available and can be accessed through both email and phone around the clock.

  • Solid Technical Mold: The technical side of the product is held together from version to version with a cemented API, development component and Interface. This does NOT include "marketplace" modules and only speaks to official Sitecore supplied and built products.
  • Easy End User Interface: Sitecore relies on a Tree type of explorer interface or a WYSIWYG in site editing experience. If implemented correctly for the specific company a user will be proficient very quickly.
  • Scaling and Performance: Even despite following best practices from Sitecore, Microsoft and development community an IT department can produce a successful website. The base rendering engine, end user tools and content delivery system will hide an enormous amount of bad design and coding before being noticed by management and web users.

Cons

  • The schema design within ATG is poor. It does not follow accepted standards. For example, column naming is inconsistent and generalized, with multiple (unrelated) tables using column names like "ID" as primary/foreign keys. This is a barrier to an intuitive understanding of the schema. Out of the box, the schema is missing many important foreign key relationships. In fact, the publishing schema explicitly prohibits FK relationships, causing data inconsistencies when ATG's black-box algorithms fail. We've built an impressive arsenal of custom scripts specifically for handling the many exceptions and orphan conditions that arise from this design practice.
  • The job scheduler is poorly designed. It uses a database table to manage message queueing. The processes flows as follows: Messages are inserted into a table. Then, a scheduled process selects messages, applies them, updates the message row on success/failure, then goes back and looks for messages that are "complete" in order to delete them. It performs this in a serialized loop that is inefficient and heavy on database resources. There are far better ways for processing message queues than trying to leverage a database.

  • Ease-of-Use: This has greatly improved in version 8 but naturally when a platform offers an immense amount of features, the usability becomes more challenging. For those organizations that can truly take advantage of the enterprise-level capabilities, proper training and onboarding (organizational change management) is a must-have in order to see the vision fulfilled.
  • Email Marketing: In particular, the email marketing capabilities are still maturing along with volume capacity. The basics are solid, but the more advanced features still have some caveats in their function. Version 8.2 of Email Experience Manager shows some potential in rounding out the capabilities.
  • E-Commerce: While perhaps not a weakness in technical capability, there are currently multiple e-commerce solutions both directly from Sitecore and from closely-integrated technology partners, making it challenging to determine which is the proper solution for each business situation.

With any platform that offers so much capability, usability will naturally be more challenging. Sitecore does an admirable job and made massive strides in version 8, but at some times offers too many ways to achieve the same task allows users to sometimes take a path less efficient than the preferred path.

Make sure you work with a partner that can help you take advantage of the entire platform. Specifically we see a lot of customers not taking advantage of Sitecore DMS and thus missing a huge opportunity. Sitecore is a platform that is meant to be constantly optimized and improved upon.

Alternatives Considered

We're married to Oracle ATG Web Commerce for the time being, and have been users for about six years now. We are slowly moving auxiliary features out of ATG and into custom in house solutions that give us purpose built, more responsive, and more appropriate functionality. Eventually, ATG will serve only core features like catalog management and order processing. All other activities will be handled externally as microservices that we control, rather than relying on the black box of ATG.

Return on Investment

  • We were able to drive sales for one of our clients up by 50% over the course of a 6 month window by revamping their online web store with Oracle ATG.
  • Sharing data and communication improved greatly between legal/finance and marketing.
Joseph R. Sweeney profile photo
  • Limiting the estimation of ROI to the gains you get as a result of a big bang re-platforming effort, without considering the possible gains as a result of ongoing improvements, may be leaving out a BIG part of the equation. With the team trained to make use of higher level marketing functions and a metrics-friendly corporate culture in place, you are now poised to get down to the real tuning effort. One of the more dramatic case studies that comes to mind is the story of the $300 million button – a string of small theories and an inclination to test can potentially offset any initial investment costs.
  • These five considerations are a good start to begin creating a strong case for investment in a CMS solution like Sitecore. Once your organization has decided on a deployment, the next step is finding the right partner. When you come to that step, reach out to our nonlinear digital team and we'll get you started.
