Oracle ATG

I would say that Oracle ATG Web Commerce is most likely better suited for companies that have a wide selection of products online as well as a customer base that is robust enough to justify this software. We were managing several stores and so we needed this software to create an atmosphere of quick and efficient searching from customers as well as some sort of guidance for products that they would like based on their searches

Great for companies that are looking to create customized, tailored content solutions and be willing to put in the hard work and effort to maximize the value out of the tool. If your company is just looking for very basic content management without all the bells and whistles, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for less [money].

Pros

  • Easily customizable dashboards that are versatile and fit the needs of different departments within a company.
  • Search tool is unparalleled and provides multiple parameters for narrowing down your query in a jiffy.
  • Customer service is always available and can be accessed through both email and phone around the clock.
Joseph R. Sweeney profile photo
  • Customer Profiles - the ability to identify key features on the site and flag those interactions to tie customer visits back to specific persona types.
  • Lead Scoring - the ability to establish a funnel for leads and use this funnel to assign a score or qualification within the sales funnel.
  • Personalization - the ability to tailor experiences to unique customer segments based on their needs, identifiying and optimizing the experience in real-time.

Cons

  • More administrative control would be helpful in regards to estimates and quoting as this was something we did regularly in legal but had to go outside the system.
Joseph R. Sweeney profile photo
  • A/B Testing - the user experience for setting up a new test is a little clunky and doesn't make experience creation very intuitive.

With any platform that offers so much capability, usability will naturally be more challenging. Sitecore does an admirable job and made massive strides in version 8, but at some times offers too many ways to achieve the same task allows users to sometimes take a path less efficient than the preferred path.

Sitecore captures and remembers every single interaction your customers and prospects have in any part of the system, allowing you to build comprehensive, ever-learning profiles of each individual. From email marketing, to social media, to online shopping, Sitecore remembers where each interaction left off so you can automatically continue the conversation. Sitecore helps you manage your content for each and every experience your customers enjoy. Customize what content you want and the system will take care of how it's displayed.

Make sure you work with a partner that can help you take advantage of the entire platform. Specifically we see a lot of customers not taking advantage of Sitecore DMS and thus missing a huge opportunity. Sitecore is a platform that is meant to be constantly optimized and improved upon.

Alternatives Considered

We're married to Oracle ATG Web Commerce for the time being, and have been users for about six years now. We are slowly moving auxiliary features out of ATG and into custom in house solutions that give us purpose built, more responsive, and more appropriate functionality. Eventually, ATG will serve only core features like catalog management and order processing. All other activities will be handled externally as microservices that we control, rather than relying on the black box of ATG.

After evaluating OpenText, we found that Sitecore has stronger capabilities to utilize the content for personalization and contextual marketing. We also favored Sitecore's user permissions, roles, and content creation processes out of the box.

Return on Investment

  • We've been on ATG for several years so it's difficult to quantify its impact on AOV and conversion compared to other products.
  • Mobile in ATG is not the greatest. We chose to abandon ATG's native mobile offering in favor of a more flexible and fluid mobile engine built in house at less expense and requiring lower maintenance.
Sean Scott profile photo
  • Since moving the site to Sitecore we have had an increase in conversion - that's the ultimate goal of all these things. It's likely to be partly tied in to the re-design that happened at the same time, but the way in which you can personalise and change things really helps give the best customer journey.
  • The negative impact we've seen is mainly due to expectations around how easily things can be shared between separate instances of Sitecore - if you haven't built stuff sharable it won't be sharable, but the business have been sold Sitecore (partly) on the basis that things would be easily sharable.
  • My developers don't all like working in Sitecore - it takes time to learn, takes a long time to build and run as well as requiring a few processes around it, like Unicorn Sync, etc. One of my devs has actually asked to not work on it again! So, a potential recruitment issue.
