Blackbaud CRMMIP Fund Accounting
Considered Both Products
Blackbaud CRM
Chose Blackbaud CRM
In comparing Blackbaud CRM to Raiser's Edge, there is more room to configure, customize and seems more refined. In terms of more refined, I am referring to the user interface, the capturing of data, ability to perform simple or complex marketing processes.
MIP Fund Accounting
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
Much better user interface and menu structure.
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
MIP is hitting the sweet spot for small-medium nonprofits that need a true fund accounting solution.
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
MIP offers an unmatched level of customization and flexibility for the price. Great integration with their modules as they are in house developed so things aren't tacked on from third parties. Some of the other competitors have to go outside their company to give you what MIP …
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
I feel it's comparable to American Fundware. I prefer Blackbaud's report structure. It's much easier to be in a report area and navigate to the report required without having to start from the beginning. MIP has been in use by our agency prior to my arrival 10 years ago. It …
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
Easier to use and great customer support
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
GMS was not 2000 compliant. Fundware was sold and went out of business. A number of peers in related organizations used MIP and recommended it. This is helpful when you have a problem or a desire to try something new, and can sound it off of others that are familiar with …
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
We looked at two other software products and they just couldn't track the separate funding sources the way we needed them too. It was going to be a lot of exporting and backtracking to get the right information (at that time). And Blackbaud just didn't seem to have enough …
Chose MIP Fund Accounting
MIP is the best software for non-profits. Initially, we were deciding between MIP and Blackbaud that can meet our needs. We found that MIP is more user-friendly and more productive for our company. It has been 9 years since we started using MIP and we don't have desire to …

Blackbaud
It works well enough for fundraising purposes and donor tracking. I think it would be less appropriate for instances or industries where you don't need so many data points on someone. You are able to attach a lot of information to a record so if you don't need that info (simply need contact info for example) you might want a simpler system

I do like the check register, it is easy to access. It is also easy to access information for bank reconciliations but some entries are difficult and I have had ongoing issues with duplicated entries. Those situations coming at times when I am not really sure how I have duplicated an entry and they are somewhat intimidating. It is also somewhat difficult to delete or void erroneous entries or those that need to be otherwise corrected. I do understand that it is accounting software, but feel again that it could be a little bit more user friendly, at least from a fairly "new" user's standpoint!

Pros
Blackbaud
  • Accessing in-depth data for a single constituent is easily done and customizable by user working with "tiles" on the home screen
  • Generating lists of possible prospects with specific similarities can be done with a few clicks and then stored for more research later
  • well designed relationship options allow for a a look at specific constituents and how they might relate to other constituents in the system leading to more effective prospecting
  • Screens can be easily customized by user or user group eliminating irrelevant data and presenting only truly relevant information

  • General Ledger processing, including journal entries and reports
  • Ability to download all reports directly to Excel and PDF formats
  • Use of Grant codes to enable grant reporting by month/quarter/year
  • Ability to have multiple departments and consolidate into groups for reporting
  • Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable cannot be out of balance
  • Multiple ways to use the product including Cloud and Classic options, Visual menu or Standard (Top of screen) menus to select processes, many options we are not using in our simple organization

Cons
Blackbaud
  • Certain aspects of Blackbaud are oddly non-customizable.
  • Blackbaud updates/support is slow and often ineffective - our organization switched to Microsoft 365, which is apparently incompatible with Blackbaud. Help/support recommended clunky workarounds that don't actually work, rather than proactively enhancing compatibility
  • There should be a flag in constituent search to show which people in the results list are deceased.
  • Query isn't very user friendly. It should be simple to locate the information that you want to pull, and add parameters to that information. Instead you have to write multiple queries to set parameters, then write a query that looks at those other queries. It's time-consuming and easy to make mistakes, and the knowledge/proficiency is difficult to explain or transfer to new staff.
  • Blackbaud generally just feels like its technology is outdated. It wasn't built for the needs of a modern organization, and its developers have failed to make the necessary improvements over time to stay competitive.

  • With the payroll process, if there is an error in sending the stubs through email, there is no option to resend without a restore. That really needs to change.
  • Being able to void encumbrance at the same time as a PO would be an incredible time saver.
  • When processing W2 the system deletes info.

We've covered a lot, but mostly because we are happy with the system overall. There are a few kinks, and sometimes it takes a minute to figure out the right wording to pull a report or the best way to code a new category that we want to track. But Blackbaud is always there to help us, and once things are figured out - they are super simple to replicate. It wouldn't be worth it to switch to a new system and lose of all our information and time put in to mastering the system

My company is pretty dug into our current day-to-day systems that serve our operations (ServTracker, Kantime, MicroMD). Without MIP Fund Accounting, we would have no choice but to figure out a way to consolidate those three accounting/operations programs into (ideally) one program, which is basically impossible if we want to salvage any historical data. MIP Fund Accounting is a great hub to bring all those pieces together in a palatable form.

I have used this system for about 12 years now and I still learning how to use it. It always surprises me how there is another report to learn to achieve my data reporting goals. It is great to have a system that you have used long enough to feel comfortable with but also a system that allows you to learn new ways to report and enter data into the system

I have rarely encountered any issues accessing MIP Fund Accounting over the years. On the rare occasions when availability was interrupted, the reasons were always found in-house when using the on-premises version. Since we have migrated to the MIP cloud, we have had no issues with availability. Any maintenance or updates are always communicated to us and are usually done outside of business hours.

This software is really good as you can run reports for various funds by Revenue Code or Grant code to capture all the data you need for specific revenue streams. Like I said before, this software is amazing for the tracking of grants if you set up your chart of accounts up correctly.

Blackbaud
I have not personally had to reach out to Blackbaud CRM Support, because we have a central office that manages the Blackbaud CRM relationship. However, any time I've reached out to our support team, there is nothing they can't figure out by utilizing the support they receive from Blackbaud CRM. I've not had any issues that have gone unresolved, and they can always get things done in a timely fashion.

I have not reached out to MIP for technical support; however, their website offers great help resources so I can solve an issue on my own. Another team member reached out to MIP for support and was helped quickly. The transition process took longer than expected due to a lag in communication.

There are no specifics on what happens if you make one choice or another to know which is the best selection. This is true for JVs and AP. In training we were not given specifics of what happens when one possibility is selected over another.

Denise O'Malley provided training for the HR module when we added it to our system. Denise also gave us a demo of the EWS module which we were able to see that it would not meet our needs. She was very kind about and understanding regarding the functions we needed with a time clock system.

Most of our issues were self-inflicted and related to BB's work. We did not "staff up" correctly, our data to be converted was not in great shape and we set some unreasonable goals. With BBs help we were able to clean our data and prep it for conversion and we adjusted the goals to be more achievable with the timeline we were given. We found the BB staff to be responsive and focused, especially when working on-site with us.

Don't waste your time with MIP. There are plenty of other softwares out there that will do the job better. Do your homework. Get references from actual users. Make sure that what you choose will truly integrate. Make sure that there is local support. Get training. You will be glad that you passed this one by. Trust me.

Blackbaud CRM is more robust and has better functionality. It is necessary for a bigger fundraising shop. Blackbaud Raiser's Edge and NXT worked well in smaller organizations with fewer users and fewer donors/prospects. RE was more affordable than CRM was for the smaller organization.

The HRA used RealPage (I'm not sure if it is actually the one listed above), and it did not work well. I'm not sure if it wasn't set up well, designed for larger property management companies, or just not good software, but it did not suit our needs at all. We chose a different property management software and MIP for our accounting. We used Quickbooks for Heartland Lakes, but as our business is expanding and we needed a better true fund accounting software, we chose AccuFund to start with, but it was difficult to get set up how we needed. We did not trust the information we were getting out of it, and it wasn't easily customizable to what we needed. We canceled that software and chose MIP.

The flexibility to create certain features are helpful and are designed to be easier on MIP Accounting Cloud. It has been easier than the MIP Accounting classic version. I may have not fully utilized the software to deploy across multiple departments other than generating revenue reports or expenses. As well as developing budget worksheets for our departments. Which are great as it is, but have not gone farther than that.

Return on Investment
Blackbaud
  • Change is always expensive and painful, but CRM is worth the time and effort. One immediate benefit is improved transparency internally, especially for internal accounting, controls, and compliance departments.
  • Cloud hosting helps cut cost and demand on organization staff. Improves access and meets compliance on every level.
  • Ability to make global changes to recording donor phone communication makes it a one-stop resource for a well-run development team.

  • MIP has allowed us to break down our costs even further to be able to improve our use of funding.
  • I'm looking forward to streamlining our accounting processes even further as I learn more about the possibilities with MIP.
  • As we fundraise for specific projects, we are able to track income and expenses by project to give our donors true numbers on how the money was used.
