Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

Catalyst Switches are best suited for any office or space that requires hardwired connections for a device to communicate with another device whether it be locally another end client or someone or something across the world or down the block. About the only place, I could imagine not using catalyst would be in dense data centers where a nexus infrastructure would be more suitable.

Pros

Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

  • I haven't worked on many other brands of routers/switches, but I can say with certainty that Cisco's IOS network operating system is very well written. Using the question mark helps you find a command or complete its options very easily.
  • Cisco's Catalyst documentation is superb and if you can't find what you're looking for there, you can find a ton of great blogs by certified Cisco engineers.
  • Cisco may be notorious for creating their own proprietary protocols, but for every proprietary protocol they also support the industry standard protocols.
  • Cisco Catalyst switches are genuine workhorses; we still have some switches on our network that are older than 10 years and still performing great!
  • I like the way Catalyst implements vlans; very easy and straightforward
  • I like the stacking capability of Catalyst. it's very easy to configure and you are now managing a single switch, composed of multiple switches

NETGEAR ProSafe Managed Switches

  • The switches met the data transfer needs of a small business with about 30 users and 4 servers.
  • The web interface was adequate for a business that didn't have the need to dive into a device with a CLI.
  • These were wall mounted. Not the best network design, but small businesses cut corners. The mounting holes helped with this "solution".

Cons

Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

  • They are light weight switches so will be not used for the core/distribution at large sites
  • They have limited fiber ports, so can't be used in the fiber heavy environment
  • Throughput is also low compared to other series of cisco switches

NETGEAR ProSafe Managed Switches

  • Both switches were the same model number, same firmware. One switch needed to be rebooted about every 5 weeks. This problem was never resolved.

Product support is one area that Cisco leads the field in. Other vendors try providing technical support for their products. When I purchase catalyst switches I know that "IF" I where to have a problem with one of my Cisco Catalyst switches that I can either open a TAC case online or over the phone and a knowledgeable person will be able to help me with what ever the issue is.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

These devices are used in my organization as access layer equipment. Tests were carried out on these devices with 3750 equipment and were not functional for large capacity issues. Therefore, stack batteries were removed and replaced with 2960X stack batteries, but only as an access layer because they do not have several capacities that we require for our organization.

The NetGear switches are definitely entry-level switches. They don't have the functionality (or cost) of Dell, HP, nor Cisco. But for the money, a business that is just starting out can't complain.

Return on Investment

Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

  • Getting more than 10 years out of our switches has more than met our ROI.
  • The Catalyst 2900 series (Layer 2 only) is well priced and has saved us money, compared to buying the considerably more expensive L3 switches.
  • When we were purchasing the 3700 series, the switches were so expensive we had trouble getting the budget to upgrade them. Make sure you actually need L3 switches at the access level before purchasing them!
  • Since we are a Cisco shop, the Catalyst works exceptionally well with our Cisco CallManager, Nexus switches, and wireless environment

  • The NetGear switches made a positive impact as entry level switches for a startup company.
