Likelihood to Recommend

Forcepoint Web Security

Forcepoint Web Security is well suited for diverse environments. It has a load of capabilities. It works well in both inline and explicit proxy situations. There are many authentication methods that give you many deployment options as well. Either used as a traditional Windows server, Linux install or appliance, you can really choose any form you like. The only scenario I can think of where it would not be appropriate would be one where the product was overkill for the organization. I'd say maybe a very small office setting

Zscaler Internet Access

I think the Zscaler platform is pretty well suited for short-scale networks/architectures since is hard to segment and a single error could bring down operations in your company - we've had a couple of those. At some point, the lack of flexibility has forced the implementation to take a whitelisting approach rather than a blacklisting/behavior/anomaly approach.

Pros

Forcepoint Web Security

  • This package is one of the few that offers a category, quota time, that allows us to limit certain categories and or websites for staff that would normally be blocked for customers and may not be something that is needed in their day to day job duties. We allow staff one hour a day, broken down into six 10 min increments, to visit sites for shopping, travel arrangement and other areas that are more of a personal need than a business need.
  • Forcepoint has a wide selection of categories that can be enabled, quota timed or restricted at a top-level or you can go more granular and drill down to subcategories to allow for only partial access.

  • DAS program helps ensure that you get set up properly the first time around.
  • Reports are easily customizable from minute details that you may want as IT to high-level overviews for executive presentations.
  • Lots of capability.

Cons

Forcepoint Web Security

  • The user access logs contain a lot of useless information. I understand this is very hard to tackle as I've seen this across any product that logs web activity.
  • I would like to see more customization options of website block pages.

  • Securing third party access is a bit complex to implement. These are our third party partners who require access to our data center on a temporary basis.
  • It is a bit of a learning curve to transform from the VPN and appliance architecture to this model.

It is very stable, the organisation has "locked in" the product and has no plans to change or try another product. We have already renewed our 2019-2020 licenses. It is user friendly and people catch on easily when they first use it. The only downtime is when we install Microsoft updates! It has excellent reporting which help in determining how the organisation's Internet is used and also during both internal and external IT audits.

Usability

Forcepoint Web Security

Despite the intimidating Linux CLI when you use the appliance for troubleshooting, the web security usability compensates as most of the Administration of the system is done there. It is GUI based and has an easy to use UI where one can navigate around rather easily like getting reports, checking alerts, looking the whole setup under deployment to check if all services are running in one place though there are other parts to the system.

Support

Forcepoint Web Security

Forcepoint Web Security 9.0

The is a quick first response to acknowledge your issue and the Engineers never take more than two hours to fix an issue and we hardly get issues looking at the fact that the system is pretty stable. There is also a robust Knowledge Base in the site for known problems.

While overall support was always nice and polite, most of the time it was hard to reach them and it took awhile for them to respond back in urgent cases. It was probably an isolated case but, still, it's hard to manage a tool without proper support from the vendor when in need.

Alternatives Considered

Forcepoint Web Security

We used a FireEye security appliance for additional levels of protection. Our other security systems were working so well that the FireEye only tripped once or twice a month, usually for activity on our Guest network. We made the decision to discontinue the FireEye appliance and to rely on the ForcePoint Web Security solution.

I have previously used Websense and Bluecoat, both with mixed results. Zscaler is the superior product if for no other reason that is far easier to deploy and manage

Return on Investment

Forcepoint Web Security

  • Because a new version of Forcepoint must be rolled out when Chrome is updated, this can have a negative impact. Last year, we scrambled to release a new version of Chrome in order to be safe from a zero-day vulnerability and had to wait till the latest version of Forcepoint was released. We blocked the use of Chrome until we could rollout both products which caused many users to complain about loss of productivity due to not being able to use Chrome.
