Catalyst 9400 Series Switches
Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches
We use the Catalyst 9400 series switches in our wiring closets as our access layer switches. They provide the necessary connectivity for wired ports and support 5 gig ethernet power over ethernet for our access points.
Pros
- They seem to be performing very well for our wired access needs
- They are easy to configure
Cons
- DNA center deployment of the switches seems somewhat tedious to configure.
- We were able to stand these devices up very quickly in an emergency situation where all of our previous wiring closet switches were destroyed by water.
The only automation type feature we have used is the deployment of the initial configuration to the switches via DNA Center. It did help us deploy a standardized configuration to the switches but it was pretty tedious to set up in DNA Center initially.
I am not sure we have utilized any of these features in our environment. Nothing comes to mind immediately on it so I can't make much of a claim on this topic.
The Catalyst switches definitely have a more robust feature set than the Meraki switches but the Meraki switches are intended for a different use case than the Catalyst switches. We used Catalyst switches in our wiring closets because they fit in better with the topology and feature sets that we wanted to deploy.
