Overall Satisfaction with Parallels Remote Application Server
At first it was used as a Call Center application suite, so that our call center users could connect to their apps via thin clients, which worked very well and cut down the maintenance overhead for our support team. As we migrated more and more servers to AWS, we needed a way for some departments to run their apps at the proper speed, as the network connection between us and AWS was too slow to support the programs locally. Parallels became the go to for any apps that required heavy network traffic, as the Parallels app could be run in the same AWS region as the one hosting the app server, basically creating a local network in a remote location.
Pros
- Very easy to set up
- Works well with profile redirection
- Easy to switch servers in and out of service, for easy maintenance.
Cons
- In switching servers in and out of service, it would be nice if Parallels migrated the user session immediately to an available server. As it is, you need to wait for them to close their apps before they are out of the old server, or kick them out, which ends their session. (Note : I am still on version 16, so this may be a thing now)
- I've found that Parallels needs to be set up with the HTTPS cert directly on the app in order to host secure traffic for the HTML5 site. Would be nice if it allowed HTTPS traffic to be sent to it via the load balancer, so the cert can be managed there instead.
- Our company has a very small IT support team (3 people), so being able to provide a solution that works well with thin clients saved them humongous amounts of time. No worries about desktop corruption, viruses, re-installs, nothing. Just turn it on and go. Problem? Turn it off and on, and go. And if there are any viruses or the like stored in the user profiles, our security team has direct access to those profiles to clear things out, and secure them. Centralizing our environment this way has cut the work to a tenth of what it would normally be.
Consolidating our hundreds of users into a single platform supported by thin clients has made troubleshooting and issue reduction much simpler with far fewer instances of issues. Most users, when encountering an issue would simply reboot their thin client and self-resolve. This reduces the tech support workload from spending all day troubleshooting various applications, to only needing to handle the occasional password reset. From an application server management standpoint, it has allowed us to provide department-wide access to new applications in minutes. No GPOs pushing software MSIs, no desktop visits to find out why this person or that's application is messing up. Just publish, test it for yourself, and then open it up to the users.
I am part of a team responsible for maintaining our servers. I cannot tell you how many times we had servers get issues while I am on the train, or driving, or otherwise away from my laptop. Being able to pull out my phone and rdp into any server from the side of the road has been a life saver.
We don't use these.
We don't use most of these, but for the permission policies, we have used it to create department application folders, which are tied to Active Directory Security Groups. When IT Support is creating a new user, they just add that department SG to them, and that user is now fully set up with all the Parallels hosted apps they need.
We have also needed to provide access to vendors and locations that cannot install the Parallels client. Having SSL on the HTML5 gateway has allowed us to provide Parallels access to these vendors to approved applications securely.
