Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor

It is being used by our engineering and support departments. It provides monitoring for our infrastructure.
  • Highly customizable
  • Very adaptable - you can use it in many different ways
  • Scalable - Capable of managing ten devices or ten-thousand
  • Inconsistent reliability
  • Support is horrible and ineffective
  • Expensive licensing
  • Overall, it provided decent network monitoring without significant initial configuration.
  • Hardware health alerts
SolarWinds is an old, outdated codebase. It is sluggish and difficult to work with for the most part. It is very easy to set up initially and maintain if you have a small or simple network. I would recommend a combination of ELK stack and a time series metric recorder instead.
SolarWinds NPM is ideal for a homogenous, wired network. If you have any devices that are not Cisco, Juniper, or Brocade it takes a significant amount of time to set the software up. It is also much better at alerting than time series reporting. They really want you to have all of the licenses in Orion to get the full use of the software.
