Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Unitrends for our enterprise backup solution. It is used to backup servers at our primary data center as well as a few servers located in other places. This allows us to perform server backups and replicate them to a secondary data center.

Pros and Cons

Allows for backup of physical and virtual servers.
Performs database backups where SQL server is involved.
Allows recovery of an entire server or individual files as requested from users.

After recovering files to a CIFS share it is not easy to delete the files after you are finished with them.
Inside the backup and restore dashboard some of the options are named similarly and it can be easy to confuse them sometimes (Recover files vs. File Level Recovery vs Instant Recovery).
It can sometimes take a while for replication to complete but that is influenced by the connection speed.

Return on Investment

At the time of renewal we saved the cost of replacing the hardware as it was bundled into the renewal cost over 3 years.
Using the appliance and being able to replicate to an offsite location allowed us to eliminate the cost of transporting media offsite with a 3rd party.

Alternatives Considered

We evaluated and compared the Unitrends solution to the offerings of Datto, Veeam, and Zerto. Overall it just seemed like a better solution for us. Zerto was not able to offer a backup solution for physical devices and that is something that we needed due to having some physical servers at other locations. From a price and features perspective Unitrends provided what we needed with an interface that was easy to navigate and a price that was reasonable.

We have been able to use Unitrends to restore an entire server after Windows updates failed to install correctly. We were able to take the backup from a physical server then create a virtual server and restore from the backup then use the virtual server going forward. We have also been able to use the bare-metal recovery when a server died about a month after implementing Unitrends.
