Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is used in our environment to back up SharePoint and OneDrive. We made the decision not to back up Microsoft Teams. This grants us the ability to restore user files and sites.

Pros and Cons

File Structure: Veeam makes it easy to find files for restore
Ease of use: Does not take long to get familiar
Alerting: Veeam does a good job of alerting when jobs fail or succeed.

Restoration: Veeam Backup for 365 can be a pain when restoring. It may take a while to open folders or files.
Explorer: Veeam Explorer has been very slow to run when searching for specific files.
Support: Support with Veeam could be better.

Return on Investment

Veeam has given us the ability to recover faster from incidents, which could save thousands if not millions in the long run.
We have spent the last 5-6 months trying to fix an issue with our Veeam Backup solution. Support has not provided much help.

Veeam for Microsoft Office 365 Needs Assessment

We understood we needed to back up 365 data when more of our stack moved to 365 and the cloud. There are thousands of user files in places like OneDrive and Sharepoint that we knew needed protection.

Usability

Veeam is very easy to use. The UI is clean and not jumbled up. Figuring out basic tasks will not take long for a regular tech worker.

I have restored on numerous occasions files that were lost or accidentally deleted or corrupted. This has saved 100s of hours of work for various departments being able to recover these files.

The restoration flexibility is nice. Being able to restore a file to its exact location makes it very easy for the user to find restored files. I have not used many other restoration methods.

My favorite feature is Explorer and the ability to keep the file structure of your 365 environment through Veeam. It makes the process familiar and easy. I also like Veeam's retention ability. It is well documented and gives the ability to choose what date you like to restore your file from.

Support is not great. Usually, they will not dive into things with you and just give you a use case example or knowledge base article.

Likelihood to Recommend

Veeam for 365 is well suited in an environment with lots of resources, especially for organizations utilizing a diverse stack of 365 products. It has the ability to back up almost any 365 app. It is less suited for small organizations, Veeam 365 could be replaced by something less robust.

My main pitfall is the restore process. When it works correctly it is perfect, but that does not happen often. It gets hung or stuck often and takes a very long time to even open explorer sometimes as well as restore.
