Abas ERP

ABAS by far offers the most bang for the buck. We are able to handle all of our business functions through ABAS and also have additional features like Business Apps, Business Intelligence, Vendor and Customer portals, as well as many other features that many other ERP packages didn't have. It has allowed us to consolidate our software packages and also provide visibility since everything is now connected.

NetSuite

As a huge fan and advocate of single (or few) systems, I think NetSuite is a great solution for most 30+ employee companies that have a need to operate in the cloud. The cost and effort to integrate multiple systems (even if they're really good point solutions) rarely outweighs the value of a single system.

Pros

  • Flexibility. ABAS is fully customizable. This allows us to create a work environment that is as custom as we are. Some ERP software packages force you to adopt their methods. With ABAS we can build the system the way we want it to work.
  • Adaptable. ABAS has the ability to work with other software packages and provide a seamless connection. We use Solid Works for our engineering designs. ABAS is connected to Solid Works and this eliminates transfer errors while reducing the time it takes for engineers to load bills of material.
  • Service. ABAS has well-trained service technicians. The time it takes to get a response is minimal and the network of knowledge their support group has, helps to streamline any tasks we may present or questions we may have.

  • NetSuite ERP is a very robust piece of software. That is its biggest advantage.
  • Also the fact that they have developed through their local representative companies, packages with accounting rules specific to each country.
  • Additionally, it looks a little bit more modern than other robust software similar in the industry. But just a little.

Cons

  • ABAS is headquartered in Germany with a US based headquarters in Virginia. Some of the programming structures were based on European methods that differed somewhat from the way business is done in the US. ABAS-USA has worked to modify the system so that it is in tune with US business practices and has made great strides in this effort. For the average user, the structures may go unnoticed, but for the more advanced user, some of the field names that are used for advanced reporting might be in German. However, ABAS-USA has recently been updating the programming language to be fully in English.
  • Because ABAS is growing rapidly, more complex customizations might take longer to complete than normal. ABAS appears to be bringing on even more technicians to handle the increased workload so the concern is waning.

  • Customer Support - We use 3rd party consultants for first level support. Only when the issue is proven to be a defect do we report it to Gold Support, in which case the majority of time they inform us (after much time) that they filed a defect and the issue cannot be resolved. We never use support for how to questions, as they are usually poorly trained, have no familiarity with our business at all, and take a long time to respond. 27% of our fees are for support so this is a huge waste of money.
  • WMS - I do not think they are selling it anymore, but we it has proven to be very buggy, inaccurate, and ultimately a bad decision.
  • SuiteCommerce Advanced/Website - The SCA platform has a very strong "My Account" page in terms of how tightly integrated it is with the backend (assuming it is set up properly). But every other aspect of the site is nowhere near the capabilities of the functionality and flexibility you would get from a Shopify or WooCommerce site (for midmarket companies).
  • Account Management & Pricing - I have a long and storied history dealing with account managers at Netsuite. Suffice it to say that you need to make sure you lock down pricing whenever possible to avoid being gouged at renewal. And expect them to sell you any module possible with promises of functionality that you will never be able to take advantage of.
  • Speed - Page load times are ridiculously slow at times. We are not given the proper access or tools to diagnose the cause and fix it as this is SAAS and that end of the things is locked down to a certain degree.

I am not the decision maker for this but I believe our company will be sticking with NetSuite for the long term. A CRM like this is a big investment and not something you move away from quickly and without a lot of planning. There is a lot of data involved and importing that into a new system is no easy task.

Depending on what your assigned role is in Netsuite, you have different access to the system. While every staff member has different access, views are still consistent - everything is under the heading it should be and I can still figure out things even if accessing through someone else’s view.

Everything is linked together so you can move back and forth easily.

You can customize your views, based upon what I need to see or find important to me

Their staff is not that knowledgable and it takes a lot of effort on our part to escalate. We have gold support which we access via support a support line. I am not sure what all it includes. I find that our account manager is more like a sales person, though he is our escalation point of contact. Earlier on, they scheduled upgrades at end of quarter. Even last year we had a problem where they did an upgrade at a critical time

NetSuite’s own implementation team did not have a lot of understanding about how we did things, like the way we recognize revenue etc. It was more cost efficient to have our contractor do it. Their services in general cost a lot of money. We ran concurrently with QuickBooks and NetSuite for three months and compared numbers to make sure reconciling, then made the cut-off.

Depending on where you are/ what system you’re using you should make sure your chart of accounts is good. Make sure you make the right decisions in setting it up and make sure that the revenue lines that you have decided on are going to the right accounts. Also, try and not make the system too customized

Alternatives Considered

These other software packages all have strengths but for what we were looking for in one system, to handle most of our business processes, but also allow the flexibility to be customized (without the need to be placed on a "like to have" waiting list), ABAS gave us that ability, hands down.

We selected Netsuite over Financial Force because at that moment Netsuite had a localization feature we needed to consolidate financial information from a company outside the US and they had the feature for the accounting rules of that specific country.

We have been able to scale our business 25X without any major overhaul with Netsuite. Its dashboard setup makes onboarding new employees very easy and allows data to be shared across multiple offices. Its cloud setup does not put any pressure on IT to scale servers or other infrastructure. We have been able to become much more efficient in all aspects of the business.

Return on Investment

  • ABAS has the capability to handle many of the processes that we did on various software platforms. Since we've been able to consolidate these platforms, the cost of subscriptions, maintenance and management hasve been reduced.
  • Efficiency was a noticeable impact right from the start. In the past, reports from one system had to be loaded into another in order to provide the analysis needed for business decisions. Connections to our design software also reduced the amount of time our engineers spent manually creating bills of material and purchase requisitions.
  • The ability to see what's happening in various business functions all in one place has helped with decision making and provided the data necessary to ask the right questions when arriving at those hard decisions.
Josh Schroeder profile photo
  • Workflows have streamlined our sales and purchasing processes. It is easy for our staff to follow the workflows to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. The processes have required very little maintenance or training since implementing them over four years ago.
  • We have all relevant accounting and operating data in one place, which helps decision-making. For example, we can make product mix decisions by viewing margins over time by sku.
  • The only negative is the cost. We could save on monthly subscription costs by using Xero combined with an order and inventory management solution like Unleashed. However, we would lose efficiency by not having all processes integrated into one system.
