If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

It fits the perfect bill for SMB units who operate on a small scale if you are looking for the below needs:

1. Simple reports with few complexities in SQL queries etc.
2. Fits for less no.of users (reporting admins, reporting users). Hardware needs to scaled up accordingly with the increase of usage/ concurrency of the reporting system.
3. Fits for simple scheduling purposes where there are few managers who want reports on a daily basis.
4. Simple dashboards.
5. Monitoring purposes. (Production unit).

in case of implementing for large enterprises need to consider the below aspects.
1. No.of users
2. Need to do perf test every report based on concurrency before moving to production.
3. Constant monitoring of reporting servers when the load/ concurrency goes high.
4. Restrict dashboards to only few reporting admins compared to large scale.
5. Constant changes in hardware based on the usage. (physical resources needs to be beefed up in case of higher usage).
6. Check the costly queries, constant fine tuning.
7. Architecture of Web should be made in such away that you can upgrade Jasper web with out impacting your DB. So that in case if Jasper team informs to upgrade for couple of fixes.

Pros

  • The software can be tied to Actuate Basic which is much like MS Visual Basic and can provide an almost custom application feel to some reports.
  • Actuate had field movement tools that allowed a user to line rows up and disperse them across a report based off the width. Comparative tools like Crystal did not provide these.
  • The Actuate Server also gave easy access to review who had been running a report or reports via its web interface.

  • Custom design reports in Jaspersoft Studio. There is a lot of flexibility to customize reports. You can create easy reports in a quick time frame or complex report in a bit more time.
  • The company does not need a 100% developer to develop reports. Someone with some level of developer experience could use Jasper Studio
  • Jasper also provides a stand-alone web server to deploy your reports. This opens up a lot of Jaspersoft Studio files.
  • There is a lot of time and effort put into the software. Years of input that improved all levels of the applications. Jasperstudio, Jasperserver, a manual, the community, etc.
  • Flexibility is awesome, you can do almost anything. Having well-rounded REST API or you can use the Java Studio.
  • There is a lot out of the box functionality. Scheduler, stand-alone reports, report output formats, logging settings, customization of GUI to a degree, permissions, roles, and user setup Studio, etc.

Cons

  • Report rendering can take a long time for large reports (250,000+ pages) - we run these in batch over night
  • The deployment of production code from development to test to production enviroments can be complex due to the number of components that must compile

  • Repository interface is a flat structure. Folder or other structure would be best for numerous reports for several different departments.
  • Should come fully equipped with all available properties for High Charts
  • Better user guides that includes more information about configurations for styles, conditions, etc. that aren't covered in the guide.

Even though there are challenges with Architecture, sizing and other areas with Jaspersoft provided that Jaspersoft comes up with the right set of innovation, performance, scalability, and documentation in future it will be great expansion (win-win) situation for the clients and as well as Jaspersoft.

While the training was somewhat beneficial, a lot of what was taught to us was what we managed to figure out in the weeks prior. It did provide some useful tips and reference material, but overall something more tailored to our requirements would've been better.

-> Have the system thoroughly tested with production data being restored in a dummy environment before delivering to end users.
-> Don't rely on domains/dataset feature a lot especially while giving access to end users and this should be restricted to admins alone.

Breadth of Deployment

Adopted by infrastructure, ad-operations, sales, business, and account support. We are a small company and maintain a small number of accounts on this system. If pricing would be acceptable, we would roll this out to all of our customers.

Alternatives Considered

It is vastly superior to these in many ways, for complex reporting it is a much more sophisticated solution. Visualizations are very good. Javascript extensibility is very powerful, others don't support this or as well. Pentaho and MS are both OLAP oriented. Pentaho is moving more toward big data, which was not our primary focus. Others are stuck in the Crystal Reports Band metaphor.

SSRS: seems to be more performant at this point but we're still trying to figure it out

LDAP and Active Directory can be integrated. Access control can be extended with web services but it can be complicated. Different types of users can have different permissions and reports can be hidden from some users. Reports can be exported in a lot of formats including microsoft formats, and pdf. Interactive viewer is very powerful.

Data Integration

You can include a large variety of data sources, any major rdbms, big data sources, nosql stores. A developer could write a driver for many other systems, though they have wide support. They have support for a number of sources such as salesforce.com, other web based sources can be included using scripting.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • Constant and reliable, so we save on support requirements based on errors and issues.
  • Tough to measure the impact of data that is collected in presentable in a visual day where everyday employees can make business decisions.
  • Compliments the business product solutions.
