Small businesses with even smaller marketing budgets and no email marketing experience would be better off selecting a lower-end email marketing provider. However, Adestra will provide a growing company with every email marketing tool along the way.

Start off with Google Analytics and then over time if budget and further learning is allowed build out KISSmetrics. Start off with the basics. GA will give all the core basics. Over time when GA becomes too vague and you want to follow people versus just a number... upgrade to KISS or Mixpanel. Depending on your budget, go with Mixpanel since it's free up to some x number of events. KISSmetrics however will charge you up front after 14 days

Pros

  • Adestra's "dynamic" list allows users to consolidate multiple lists in combination with data filters and exclusion lists. This implements segmentation and is a powerful marketing tool.
  • Adestra's MessageFocus API integration provides developer-tools for list, campaign or transactional automated requirements.
  • Campaigns can be sorted into project folders. This allows marketers to group campaigns together for management or reporting requirements. Moving or copying campaigns from one project to another is a simple process.
  • Data downloads via Reporting is available at every level, from overview to individual KPI.
  • Creating "core" tables helps marketers develop lists with similar attributes. Whether a list has many fields or simply the one required email address field, a "core" table helps to quickly map data labels from spreadsheet to online database. Creating data labels on the fly is a simple process, as well. The "core" table also groups similar contacts into one core database.
  • Any list can be quickly "emptied" for to manage refreshed data. The contacts within the "emptied" list would still be members of the "core" table and so the process does not negatively impact reporting.
  • Unsubscribes can be managed in one list (as a default) or individual lists. Creating individual unsubscribe lists -- dependent on business requirements -- would allow for a preference center, whereby recipients could be given a choice as to which campaigns they receive.
  • The Form tool creates signup forms, simple surveys and landing pages. These can be hosted via Adestra or otherwise on the web. The tool provides for branding and proprietary cascading stylesheets, with a number of actions available through a drag-and-drop interface.

  • Kissmetrics has a fantastic dashboard where you can see all relevant metrics immediately after login.
  • Kissmetrics was extremely easy to implement in our site and it works across different platforms.
  • After the initial setup, managing and creating new events to track is super simple.
  • You can monitor live usage. This feature allows you to monitor user interactions as they are happening and as events you are tracking are triggered. You can see exactly what users are doing real time, which is really a very cool feature. At the time, this kind of realtime monitoring was not possible with Google Analytics.

Cons

  • As of this writing, there are at least 3 different editors available (a drag-and-drop, a WYSIWYG and HTML). However, only a small template library is available if requested through support. Those expecting to find ready-built templates for re-branding would find them through the third-party EDM Designer drag-and-drop editor.

KISSmetrics is a no-brainer. As long as I continue to gain valuable and profitable insights from this, I'll keep using it. I foresee using KISSmetrics for a long time

I have been self-trained on different ESPs for over 10 years, so my experience isn't comparable to most users. However, I've trained people on various email marketing platforms, and with some training, clients have a positive user-experience with Adestra.

Funnel analytics reporting is generally quite good. The drag-and-drop functionality is great and it's easy to use. I would rate this a 7 or so. The problem is the home page or dashboard. This consists of a bunch of boxes with numbers in them and is very weak on visual design. It's quite confusing to look at and doesn't give an instant visual picture as to what is happening. It seems as though this was not given very much thought by the team. The Google Analytics dashboard is very much stronger in terms of visual design.

I have had campaign related issues solved very quickly. When there are technical issues, that involve more than one departmental, it may involve a longer turn-around and management.

Our front-line product support person (Mika) is great. She is responsive and great to work with.

However, the data accuracy issue described earlier is the reason for the low score here. This issue was escalated from front-line to support to level 2 technical support and then it disappeared into a black hole. Escalations, in general, do not go well. We get no response for days, or I have to chase things down. This is not acceptable. Marketing metrics are critically important to me and I need answers quickly. I cannot afford to wait around for days / weeks for a response.

Just to be clear, these comments only apply to escalated support issues.

Again, we were fortunate to work with KISSmetrics as they built their application, but Hiten, their CEO and founder, was incredibly helpful to me personally, and to our metrics-driven business as a whole, as we adopted their tool.

We did most of the setup ourselves, with some help from the vendor around tagging events and getting events to fire according to specific rules.

Making this work properly was not entirely simple, and did require some custom code.

Alternatives Considered

For medium and large sized businesses, Adestra competes well with dotMailer. While many of the functions are available through either provider, creating campaigns, managing lists and reviewing metrics are somewhat different.As of this writing, dotMailer's drag-and-drop editor dominates that platform and performs well for low-end users with little-to-no HTML experience. Even high-end users will appreciate how quickly campaigns can be built via the drag-and-drop editor. While Adestra utilizes the EDM Designer drag-and-drop, the third-party functionality is not completely cohesive and lack of a template library gives dotMailer a bit of an advantage.

Kissmetrics and Google Analytics both have their strengths and weaknesses, but for individual user and advanced campaign tracking, Kissmetrics wins. As complicated as Kissmetrics can be (depending on how advanced you want to get with it), it's still significantly easier to set up and read reports related to user funnels in Kissmetrics. Google Analytics has built-in demographics and location info, but individual user tracking leaves much to be desired. Just setting up Google Analytics requires a crash course in how to use the service, which isn't ideal for many companies who don't necessarily employ someone solely for their experience using Google Analytics, but rather their entire set of marketing skills.LiveOrange and Mixpanel are two additional competitors, but with my limited experience of them, I'm unable to go into detail about the pros and cons of those services versus Kissmetrics.
