Dynamic Tag Management

If you're on the Adobe stack at all, you absolutely need DTM. It will make your life infinitely easier. It's so simple to update your Adobe Analytics code and have version control, and when we implemented Adobe Target, it took literally less than 15 minutes for me to do. I also think it's significantly simpler than Google Tag Manager. I went through all manner of difficulty when implementing tags on that and have not had similar problems on DTM. If you're frequently placing pixels, it's a great tool that will speed their deployment.The only situation in which I think a tag manager is not appropriate is if you have a dev with too much time on their hands. Otherwise, get a TMS and get DTM.

Kenshoo would be a good tool if your client has extremely high budgets with low CPCs. For small, geo-specific accounts the capabilities have not be built out. Therefore, the tool could not budget pace our 250+ accounts. The main reason we had chosen Kenshoo was because of its budget pacing capabilities. Unfortunately, it did not save us time and created additional budget pacing issues with over pacing our accounts.

Pros

Dynamic Tag Management

  • Rules: There are a wide variety of native triggers that are included for both plain vanilla HTML and single page applications that allow for many specific combinations of triggers.
  • QA: The plugin that allows for QA within the console makes it easy to tell if a rule is firing or not without the creation of a separate environment.
  • Version Control: It is mercifully simple to roll back to an earlier version if something goes awry. Remember, no matter how good your QA, something will eventually slip through. It's much better to be able to roll back with a couple clicks.

  • Kenshoo has a support ticket center to answer support questions.

  • The initial training can be challenging, especially for people without a strong coding background, but it isn't impossible.
  • The publishing process is relatively intuitive, but could be improved upon.
  • As it is a newer program for Adobe, support is limited.

  • Kenshoo's budget management tool is not designed for small monthly budgets in competitive areas. The daily budget with adjust itself to be greater than your highest CPCs. If your bids are high with a small budget, it will over pace every month.
  • If your bids are higher than your daily budget you are not able to make bulk changes using their tools. If you try, it will kick back the upload with errors, and it will not be completed. This is another example of why their tools are not designed for high bid clients with smaller budgets.
  • We had several issues with turn over of account managers. Our first account manger was not well trained and provided bad advice/information. Due to the improper training, we incorrectly setup countless accounts. It was not until we received a new account manager were these issues addressed.

Kenshoo Search offers a fair rate based off of media spend. They also offer a dedicated account team that we are able to meet with regularly and also have quarterly strategic in-person meetings with. When problems or bugs occur, they are always quick to respond and resolve the situation. Their team is always willing to go above and beyond for our business needs.

Since we are using it almost exclusively with the implementation of Adobe Media Optimizer, we have not considered using a different tag management software.

An advantage that Nanigans has over Kenshoo is that their version of 'portfolios' didn't have any budget or flight length requirements and was extremely easy to use. They also offered 'affinity' segments. These are studies they would run on certain audiences that would result in keywords, or interest that have a high affinity towards the submitted audience group. A negative is that it was very much possible to overspend on Nanigans, whereas with Kenshoo, ad sets will never overspend their daily or lifetime budget.
