Microsoft Office 365

I strongly recommend Microsoft Office 365, for those companies that are starters or if they're looking for a collaborative Microsoft Suite to reduce deployment times, and stressful management, Office 365 can allow you to run your mail accounts, shared cloud Files and, IM communication, track down the usage of information and leverage the process of delivering to your teams the development of company process. Remember is a great tool if you got a decent Internet Service Provider, if not you'll need another on premise solution to avoid sync issues or data disruptions.

Pros

  • Alfresco is able to handle a very large number of documents without requiring huge server capacity.
  • Alfresco is able to connect to the cloud solution and to share documents with an external organisation without security issues.
  • Alfresco implements standards like CMIS, and provides very simple integration points.

  • It opens and edits the vast majority of file formats given to us for our education.
  • It's widely used and relatively easy to learn if you've never been exposed to it before.
  • The additional web accessibility is handy for getting some cloud-based documents and emails while away from my computer.

Cons

  • Alfresco is a bundle of technology packaged together, so this solution requires a lot of expertise if you want to customize a lot your solution.
Ben Chevallereau profile photo
  • It's still lacking a lot of expected seamless functionality between products. Many times moving from one to the other can offer similar, yet slightly different experiences.
  • Continually being asked to use OneDrive is very annoying. We decided to use another cloud-storage solution and constantly clicking past links to OneDrive and disabling desktop uploaders for our office is very unfortunate.
  • "Playing nice with others" has never been something Microsoft has been known for with their Office suite. They're the biggest name in town, and therefore don't feel the need to support other formats. Google is doing this really well, where they can edit and save Office formats in addition to their own G Suite apps. It would be nice to see the compatibility both ways.

We have too much invested into it now to choose a different product. We have been using them from almost the beginning, and have seen decent improvements in documentation, functionality and customer support

There are many features of Office that we cannot replicate in any other tool. Plus people know it already. It's not going away anytime soon.

8 because sometimes you do need to wait for a callback or help. But they are a huge company and I can't expect to have someone at our beck and call the very few times i've needed immediate support. They're always friendly and try hard. Feel like they really want you to be satisfied.

Process was relatively smooth and overall, downtime minimal. MSI was very responsive to our needs and made the transition easier than it otherwise might have been.

Alternatives Considered

- Alfresco provides more capabilities by leveraging open source components. The core architecture itself is JCR compliant which gives easy options for future migrations.- The PDF rendition in Alfresco comes with LibreOffice at no additional cost. - Alfresco support integrations using common industry standards like CMIS, REST, CIFS, FTP, WebDAV, SharePoint Protocol etc.- Workflow development much easier in Alfresco.

Not aware of any competitors. Not sure I'd even investigate that option. Having all the Office products available that swiftly and being able to get smaller packages of it depending on the need of the user assigned account makes it entirely too easy a choice. Especially with as flexible as the plans can be.

Return on Investment

  • One company has replaced the Documentum with Alfresco and it has created a positive impact on ROI, as the cost of Alfresco is less compared to Documentum.
  • Another company has used this platform to store Statement of work documents with integration of SFDC., The business is happy to see the integration is seamless.
