AlienVault USM

AlienVault USM Anywhere is a great SIEM and if you need to deploy a SaaS solution then it is suited very well. It works very well for us being 100% AWS and integrates well with our toolset and AWS features. The Open Threat Intelligence (OTX) is perfect for providing context on events and feeding our incident response processes.

ServiceNow

ServiceNow is great for IT service management in which you can capture customer incidents and implement a great change process. All of these processes aim to make your internal structure more efficient and easy. However, when it comes to managing customers on top of performing your daily internal processes, ServiceNow lacks that full 360 view of how handling customers can affect your internal processes and vice versa.

Pros

  • AlienVault USM is based on well-known Open Source components, which each for itself, represents a quasi industry standard
  • Integration into the existing infrastructure works like a charm. Basically you just need to roll-out an OSSEC client to each server or PC and you have already a pretty high coverage of security information and events. They immediately show up in the AlienVault Webinterface
  • Due to the countless plugins, it is very easy to add network devices like firewalls, router, switches, but also servers running apache and the alike. You will just need to forward syslog and it will all appear in your AlienVault Webinterface
  • The modular design of AlienVault USM in form of "deployable sensors", allows you to easily integrate different network segments, such as remote sites.
  • As regular vulnerability scans are a must to understand which CVEs your infrastructure is exposed at, this becomes an easy task with AlienVault. They provide you with a set-and-forget approach for running regular scans. Additionally there are helpful hints to how to get more secure.

Cons

  • The vulnerability scanning feature is basically useless for us. There is not an easy way to see which vulnerabilities are being scanned for, and I've confirmed that monthly Microsoft updates take forever (over 30 days) to get into the definitions. We need to see them in there within a couple of days. The scanning is all done remotely (no local agent-based scanning), which requires superuser credentials to be supplied to the scanner. Because we have a lot of remote locations connected over VPN, the scans repeatedly timeout or error out. We are exploring alternative products for this need.
  • AlienVault documentation is severely lacking. When I have opened tickets with AlienVault regarding missing documentation, I am often referred to the open source project's documentation for the component they've integrated. If AlienVault wants to integrate a component and rebrand it as part of their product, they need to take the ownership of documenting how to use it within their product.
  • AlienVault requires too much "hacking" to do anything custom. The CLI has a "Jailbreak system" mode that is required for anything outside of the most vanilla configurations. In my mind something called "Jailbreak" should not be required on a daily basis. Examples of low level config include having to create custom rsyslog.d conf files to aggregate syslogs from multiple devices to a single log for parsing. Using the Web UIs per asset assignment of a plugin isn't resource efficient. Doing any sort of custom rules or plugins requires CLI modification of multiple files and the OSSIM database. It shouldn't be that hard.

  • Massive and at times confusing interface
  • Too many categories of items with seemingly arbitrary differences in functionality
  • Honing in on just what you need is difficult for a basic user

No need to renew our use. We are actively using and liking it. Future outlook is continued use of the USM platform and tailoring it more and more for our environment.

Usability

AlienVault USM7.2
Based on 33 answers
After using it for some time I have found the interface to be somewhat "clunky." Some of the system management requirements have to be done from the CLI (Command Line Interface). There is no way to easily automate some of the system maintenance, that if not addressed, causes the system to become unusable after a period of time

To type in what should be a text box, you have to click an empty cell, a tiny text box pop up opens with a check box and an X. You the. Type in the text box and have to click the check mark. If you have a bunch of fields to fill out, doing this is very annoying. Absolutely know thought went in to this. I'm sure somebody in marketing thought it was a good idea. It wasn't.

Initial deployment was great compared to all the research I had read about deploying SIEM solutions. The basic setup gives excellent information about what is occurring on your enterprise network.

Without exception, every client I have worked with has been very happy with their resulting product. While this is partly due to my work, I must point out that the platform is the winning decision, not the implementer.

Alternatives Considered

We were looking at other solutions, but ultimately the sales demo we received for AlienVault looked good and was at a MUCH better price point than the alternatives we evaluated. We are also intrigued by the additional capability of vulnerability scanning.

I was not involved in the selection of ServiceNow. I am just an end user for this software. The other tools I have used were more directed toward project management, rather than issue tracking. At times, ServiceNow stacks up well, making it easy to address tasks assigned to me, communicate and collaborate with stake holders, and track time spent. On the other hand, I find the separate categories of items - incidents, tasks, projects, etc., to be overwhelming and unnecessary. As far as I'm concerned everything is "something I've got o do." I can automatically create change tasks for some, but not others, which makes little sense to me.
