AlienVault USM Anywhere is a great SIEM and if you need to deploy a SaaS solution then it is suited very well. It works very well for us being 100% AWS and integrates well with our toolset and AWS features. The Open Threat Intelligence (OTX) is perfect for providing context on events and feeding our incident response processes.

The tool is great, very powerful and provides so many valuable features used in large companies. The product is very integrated and provides amazing customization and dash-boarding options. I have looked at several ITSM products, and ServiceNow is by far the best product I have worked with. Everything is thought out and you will not find any feature or function it is missing.

Pros

  • AlienVault USM Anywhere is easy to deploy with their cloud-based model and deploying the required agents on-prem (or in the cloud) is quick and easy.
  • Custom rules allow for alerting based on content from events and you can even trigger agents in response to threats, shutting down computers or grabbing forensic info for incident response.
  • USM Anywhere also takes care of reporting for ISO and PCI, allowing you to pull reports for auditors at a moment’s notice.
  • With many integrations out-of-the-box, you can pull in all the data from products you use and other sources, such as Amazon CloudWatch Logs.

  • It does a great job building a CMDB based on data scanned by ITOM. We have looked at lots of competing products and they all require a ton of manual interaction to build a CMDB. The ServiceNow product is the most automated solution we have found.
  • The ITSM product is best of breed and provides all the bells and whistles including chat and automated actions like password reset and machine reboot.
  • The service mapping feature is very nice as it will map the root URL of your applications and create relationships needed to build the visual topology map.

Cons

  • At times I do find navigating the dashboard for very specific functions to be difficult.
  • For entry level security analysts or administrators I feel can get overwhelmed with the amount of data available from a single platform (in a good way)
  • helpful to understand Linux for certain tasks

  • ServiceNow knowledgebase is limited for self-learning on how to use their features.
  • ServiceNow sometimes has a very linear approach to some workflows or assignments where there could only be one child/parent relationship.
  • The ServiceNow features for Project Management serves its function is rather cumbersome. The dependencies aspect or predecessors or successors options are rather limited. It is more focused on hours planned vs hours worked then dependencies.
  • ServiceNow customer support is hit or miss. They could serve to have more self-help step by step articles.
  • ServiceNow needs to have a better export or import features for their Project Management module.

I have a 50/50 rating on this because they have been helpful in one aspect but not in another. They seem to be fairly responsive to requests, but like with my most recent request no solution offered. that is not truly a fair statement, but rather no solution unless I agree to pay additional fee's. From conversations with both our sales rep and another representative they both indicate that we have 3 years of extended support, but the problem reported to them is not covered under our support agreement.

To type in what should be a text box, you have to click an empty cell, a tiny text box pop up opens with a check box and an X. You the. Type in the text box and have to click the check mark. If you have a bunch of fields to fill out, doing this is very annoying. Absolutely know thought went in to this. I'm sure somebody in marketing thought it was a good idea. It wasn't.

The best recommendation I can offer is understand the system that is being installed. Knowing how to configure and specific expectations that you expect from the machine. I would say to watch the tutorials and the online video's, get yourself involved with the community forum and ask the questions if you do not understand.Our company did not make the best choice on the computer that the service was installed on and it has led to some adverse effects that did not appear until now, almost 2 years later and needing to re-install the entire system all over again.If you need the help, ask for it. The technical support team at alienvault and community forum members are always there to answer questions.

Alternatives Considered

I recommended Alert Logic, but management was drawn to the much lower price of AlienVault. Alert Logic seems to have a more mature product and has some of these features that have been lacking in AlienVault.

ServiceNow seems to be able to scale as large as you would like it to and outpaces the competition as far as ease of licenses and growth. While it is clunky it really allows you to drill down to the smallest workflow or permissions to really allow the system to build around your environment. Other products seem to want to push you towards templates or more of the "wizard" style set up.

  • ServiceNow has positively impacted ROI as it has improved the efficiency of request handling.
  • It has had the positive impact of allowing our organization to standardize on one ticketing tool eliminating a number of others.
  • A negative impact on ROI has been the licensing cost of ServiceNow. Being the premier ticket management system, it definitely has the price tag to match.
