Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Google Charts

Google Charts can fit in your company if you're seeking a resource that can be managed, customized and also deployed all over the web, mobile apps or just add as an embedded object within your website or intranet resources. Can do awesome things for Finance entrepreneurs who wanted to take out the most from reports, dashboards with statistical analysis with a wide data source. For those who don't like web coding, or just get upset by handling crossing information from sheets to databases, this won't be the tool that fits with the business readiness that you might seek with IT developers that can understand the requirements wanted to be shown by Google Chart.

Pros

  • Alteryx provides an integrated workflow management environment for data blending, analytics, and reporting. It is also very extensible to be connected to a variety of data connections including major databases (Oracle, etc.), analytics tools (R), and visualization tools such as Tableau through its plugins. Our department used Oracle and Tableau already and it was well integrated with Alteryx.
  • The workflow authoring environment in Desktop is easy to use so that most of the users (if they are a bit skilled data developers or analysts) may not need the training to use its basic functions. Drag and drop interface and icons are intuitive to understand.
  • When running Alteryx workflows, it is easy to monitor and track what's the progress by seeing percentages. It is helpful to balance and manage bandwidths of database servers, especially when to populate large data sets.

  • Very easy to learn and interactive.
  • Works well on all modern browsers.
  • It's free and includes maps.
  • Can read from Excel, Google Spreadsheets, SQL databases, CSV files and auto update.

Cons

  • Sometimes the desktop version of authoring tool crashes! It's been unstable in the previous versions but gets better. Even if it doesn't crash, it used to be slow or not responding.
  • When running several version of database drivers in local machine or server, it is tricky to set up database connections. Often you have to figure out it by googling the problem and solution. There are not many knowledge bases from Alteryx.
  • Alteryx project file creates .bak file automatically. It is useful to prevent for the purpose of back up, sometimes it's not necessary. But it is not changeable for some reason. By default, it always creates backups.

  • Doesn't yet give as much customization ability as some other packages.
  • Doesn't give you sophisticated statistical processing.
  • Requires a network connection

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

At this point, only our IT department (that develops the Dashboard) is developing with it. We have thousands of users though.

Alternatives Considered

We did not do any comparison of Alteryx with other tools, but before Alteryx we used Sandbox tables in our databases. It caused a lot of issues in terms of data consistency, workflow automation, and patient data privacy and security. Using Alteryx resolved a lot of the issues.

We selected Google Charts because it's behind the Google company, and this is a guarantee that it will always be updated and will support the vast majority of browsers. It's also updated very frequently and Google made it completely free of charge. Other libraries with similar features have an extra cost.

Google Charts, being a Google product lets you enjoy your access policies and collaboration through its authentication process. It is very similar to Google Maps or other APIs belonging to Google in that aspect.

Data Integration

I believe Alteryx's connectivity is second to none. With full ODBC and OleDB support along with a bunch of standard connectors, I don't know of another tool that can connect to as many data sources as Alteryx. Alteryx is fantastic at joins and takes out the mystery of left/inner/right by allowing you to preview the data pre-join and post-join quickly and easily to troubleshoot any issues.

Return on Investment

  • Definitely, an increase in employee efficiency. With the right tools and hardware, Alteryx can reduce the processing time significantly.
  • Automation and/or automatic report scheduling frees up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.
  • Licensing updates are somewhat not handled easily and quite often create issues with modules to run slowly and/or not being active.

  • It was a class project, we got really good scores.
  • Also, our collaborator from the city was very excited, and is working with us to deploy the visualizations we developed.
